13The Census of Marine Life
- Discovering the marine communities of the past.
- Exploring the multitude of ocean life today.
- Predicting the pattern of ocean ecosystems in the
future.
14The Census of Marine Life is
- a research program that will examine changes in
the diversity, distribution and abundance of
marine organisms in time and space - an international program that will involve
experts in a variety of biological fields from
around the globe - an emerging program that will identify key
questions and support observations and research
over the next 5-10 years
15The Census of Marine LifeBackground
- Initial concept developed by the scientific
community with funds from the Alfred P. Sloan
Foundation, NY - Expert advice sought through feasibility
workshops (1997-1998) - Secretariat established at the Consortium for
Oceanographic Research and Education (1999) - Scientific Steering Committee established (1999)
- Scientific Strategy drafted for review and
comment (early 2001)
16Themes
- Funding for Basic Ocean Science needs to be
increased - Investment in human resources needs to be
increased - An Integrated Coastal and Ocean Observing System
of systems is critical to advancing ocean science
knowledge - Ocean Science is a global priority
- Interagency Cooperation in ocean science can be
achieved - Strong and unified community voice is critical
- Partnerships between industry, government and
academia are essential to the future - Sound public policy and mitigation of
environmental issues requires more understanding
of basic processes - Oceans Commission offers unique opportunity
17Ocean Science Community Challenges
- How can we work together to
- Develop consensus on priorities?
- Federal Agencies, then Federal, State and Local
Governments - Educational and Research Institutions
- Industry
- Gain public support for those priorities?
- Increase funding to meet basic science
requirements? - Take best advantage of the opportunities
presented by the Oceans Commission? - Encourage and develop ocean science education
initiatives? - Define and build integrated ocean observing
systems (both coastal and ocean)? - Build the cross disciplinary teams needed to
address complex ocean and coastal issues?
