  • The Malvinas Current is thought to be a major
nutrient source for maintaining the productivity
    of the Patagonia shelf break.
  • Recent findings suggest that the current is
organized as several alongshore fronts and jets,
which at times may extend inshore, fertilizing
    the mid-shelf region.
  • An unusually large inshore excursion may have
    triggered the extraordinary phytoplankton bloom
    observed in austral spring 2003.

  • The Malvinas and Brazil Currents have a profound
impact on the along shelf transport in the
    middle and outer shelf.
  • The Malvinas Current impacts the Southern
Brazilian Shelf and the Brazil Current
interactions with the bottom topography induces
    shelf-break upwelling.

Science status 3
  • The Patagonia shelf absorbs large amounts of CO2
from the atmosphere, at rates only comparable
    with the northern North Atlantic.
  • The uptake occurs primarily over frontal regions
where phytoplankton blooms are largest, with
peaks during austral spring and summer.
