4Repentance Is Essential
- It is inherent to preaching the gospel
- Matthew 31-9 In the preaching of John
- Luke 131-5 In the ministry of Jesus
- Luke 2446-47 In introducing the gospel
- Acts 236-38 In the first gospel sermon
- Acts 313-19 In further gospel preaching
- Acts 2619-20 In the teaching King Agrippa
5Repentance Is Essential
- It is demanded of all who obey God
- Acts 1730-31 ...all men every where...
6Repentance Is Not...
- Just recognition of sin
- Felix did not repent though he was terrified by
recognition of his sins (Acts 2425) - Just acknowledgement of sin
- Judas did not repent though he admitted his sin
(Matt. 273-4)
7Repentance Is Not...
- Just a change of conduct
- Mob ceased beating Paul, but they did not repent
(Acts 2132) - None of these actions alone constitute biblical
repentance
8Repentance Involves Change
- Involves a change of mind, but not just
- Intellectual
- that is faith (Heb. 116)
- Relationship
- that is baptism (Gal. 326f)
- Emotional -
- that is reaction to guilt of sin (Ezra 101)
- Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had
been condemned was remorseful. . . (Matt. 273)
9Repent - to change one's mind for better,
heartily to amend with abhorrence of one's past
sins (Strongs)
Judas sinnedbetrayal Judas was
grief-stricken BUT Judas did not REPENT
A DIFFERENCE!
- Peter sinneddenied Lord (Matt. 2669-74)
- Peter was grief-stricken (Matt. 2675)
- But Peter repented for he turned his mind to
heartily amend his past (didnt end his life) but
was restored by the Lord and became a pillar in
the church (Jn. 2115ff Gal. 29)
10Repentance Is a Change of Mind Accompanied by an
Amended Life for the Better
- Repentance of prodigal son - Lk. 1511-21
- Previous a Give me life (v. 12)
- Altered to a Make me life (v. 19)
- Cf. Luke 37-14
11Parable of Two Sons (Matt. 2128-32)
31"Which of the two did the will of his father?"
They said, "The latter." Jesus said to them,
"Truly I say to you that the tax-gatherers and
harlots will get into the kingdom of God before
you. (2131 NASB)
Tax collectors and harlots didnt enter as tax
collectors and harlots, but as people who
believed and repented (v. 32, KJV)
12Parable of Two Sons (Matt. 2128-32)
- First son I will not, then regretted,
then went - Second son I go, sir but didnt go
Both men changed their mind, but only the first
repented his change of mind brought about a
change of action for the better!
132 Corinthians 710-11
- 10For godly sorrow worketh repentance unto
salvation, a repentance which bringeth no regret
but the sorrow of the world worketh death. 11For
behold, this selfsame thing, that ye were made
sorry after a godly sort, what earnest care it
wrought in you, yea what clearing of yourselves,
yea what indignation, yea what fear, yea what
longing, yea what zeal, yea what avenging! In
everything ye approved yourselves to be pure in
the matter.
14Repentance 2 Cor. 7
- Godly sorrow precedes repentance
- due to recognition of sin against God
- Causes earnest care
- Causes clearing
- Causes indignation
- Causes fear
- Causes longing
- Causes zeal
- Causes avenging
15Being Led To Repentance
- Sin
- Grieves God (Gen. 66 Matt. 2337)
- Shames God (Heb. 125-12)
- We are led to repentance by the goodness of God
- Romans 24 56-8
- When we truly repent, we
- Never recall past sins with longing or joy
- Never think lightly of penalty paid for sin
16You Will Repent If...
- You recognize sin in your life
- You are brought to godly sorrow
- You come to hate the sin identified desire to
turn away from it - You change from a will directed by self to the
will commanded by God - You are ready to do the works which are worthy of
repentance - Will you repent obey now?
