3Briefly, What is Open WorldCat?
- Open WorldCat is the program by which people
searching bibliographic and search-engine sites
can link to WorldCat and then directly into their
area libraries OPACs to see the shelf status of
items. -
4How it works
- Search engines
- Harvest WorldCat content (a subset of WorldCat)
- Search and display with other Web content
- The user
- Performs a search and retrieves records with a
Find In A Library link - The user follows this link and after typing in a
zip code or state, is given a list of libraries
that own an item - The user follows a link to the library OPAC or
Web site and can view the shelf status or put a
hold on the item if they have a library card.
Other Information Web Sites implement static
links for known items

6What is Happening Now?
- Yahoo works great. Google usually requires the
use of the terms find in a library or
WorldCatLibraries to produce library results. - Use Google or Yahoo toolbars, or a Firefox
extension to limit to WC results - 3.4 million records are indexed. 3 million of the
most widely held and 400,000 unique items.
