Title: Disease Spread Investigation
1Disease Spread Investigation
2Scenario
SARS, Severe acute respiratory syndrome, is an
atypical pneumonia of unknown cause. This
disease was first recognized in February 2003.
It usually affects adults aged 25-70 years. The
incubation period is usually 2-7 days.
3Symptoms
- Present after November 2002 with high fever
(gt38oC)
- Contact with person with history of travel in
susceptible 10 days prior to symptoms
- Have headache and myalgia
4Causative Agent
- Thought to be a coronavirus( Coronaviridae)first
isolated in 1965, spherical enveloped virion,
80-160 nm in diameter, crown-like in appearance,
club-shaped peplomars, single-stranded, linear,
non-segmented, positive-sense RNA genome
- Usually produce an afebrile cold in adults,
characterized by nasal discharge, and malaise
may exacerbate respiratory symptoms in asthmatic
and chronic pulmonary disease patients
implicated in gastroenteritis greater occurrence
in children maybe associated with pneumonia and
pleural reactions,
5Occurence
- Thought to have originated in Asia and has been
traced throughout North America and Europe.
- These cases have been tracked with various
methods by the World Health Organization and the
Center for Disease Control
6Goal
Your task is to understand the nature and
transmission of SARS. With this knowledge you
must provide information that would be useful in
preventing an outbreak as well as how to contain
an outbreak of this disease in your hometown.
7You will prepare a PowerPoint presentation with
your findings to include the following
- Introductory slide of SARS basic information
- Chart citing previous locations and number of
cases
- Graph with transmission rates and locations
- Your EMERGENCY PLAN in case of outbreak including
funding required in Excel document
