• Susan Eloise Hinton began writing The Outsiders
  at the age of 15.
• She was inspired to write The Outsiders because
  of the two groups in her Tulsa, Oklahoma high
  school, the Socs (Socials) and the Greasers.
  She also witnessed the beating of her friend by
  two high school students.
• She chose to use her initials when trying to
  publish The Outsiders so male reviewers would not
  ignore the novel.
• Other works by S.E. Hinton That Was Then, This
  Is Now Rumble Fish Tex and Taming the Star
  Runner.

Themes in The Outsiders

• Themes are the fundamental and often universal
  ideas explored in a literary work. They are the
  underlying message in a work.
• Class conflict (Separation of class by political
  beliefs and social-economic status.)
• Brotherly love
• Friendship
• Coming of Age

The Greasers

• Greasers come from hard knock backgrounds.
• They like to listen to the music of Johnny Cash
  and Elvis Presley.
• Their attire usually consists of tight fitting
  t-shirts, leather jackets, and snug jeans. They
  like to slick their hair back. (grease their
  hair)
• Many Greasers are engaged in criminal activities,
  which causes many people to incorrectly assume
  that all Greasers are juvenile delinquents (JD's).

Who are The Greasers?

• Pony Boy Michael Curtis, 14, the youngest Curtis
  brother and protagonist of the novel.
• Sodapop Patrick Curtis, 16, the middle Curtis
  brother.
• Darrel Shaynne "Darry" Curtis, 20, the oldest of
  the Curtis brothers. He had to assume parental
  responsibilities when their parents died.
• Johnny Cade,16, small timid boy.
• Dallas Winston, 17, tough guy.
• Keith Two-Bit Matthews, 18, the joker of the
  group.
• Steve Randle,17. Sodapops friend who is not nice
  to Ponyboy.
• Tim Shepard, 18, runs the Shepard gang.

The Socs

• Socs (short for social) are spoiled kids from
  well-to-do rich families.
• They enjoy jumping Greasers without provocation.
• They like to listen to Beatles music.
• They dress in madras shirts.

Who are the Socs?

• Sherri Cherry Valance, Bobs girlfriend. Her
  nickname comes from her red hair.
• Robert Bob Sheldon, beat up Johnny before the
  events in the book. Johnny stabs and kills Bob in
  self defense.
• Randy Adderson, Bobs friend. He is tired of the
  fighting between the Greasers and the Socs. Does
  not go to the rumble.
• Marcia, Cherrys friend at the drive-in theater.
