CIF Project Objectives

• The project will develop electronic and
  blended learning, that is the integrated
  combination of traditional learning with
  web-based online approaches, in Merthyr Tydfil to
  raise attainment levels.
• The project will support and enhance the
  curriculum across key aspects of post-16
  learning, including secondary schools, FE, work
  based learning and adult community learning
• Project commences 1st December 2006 completed
  by 31st March 2007

What is a VLE?

• A virtual learning environment is essentially a
  web site (or equivalent networked learning
  structure) that provides a number of basic
  functions deemed valuable in the learning
  process. Normally, a set of tools and navigation
  aids are provided, with the aim of placing any
  online educational materials into clear,
  organised structure.
• Such an "environment" will provide students with
  easy access to course documents, lecture notes,
  online courseware, questionnaires and
  communication tools.

• Utilise Moodle a course management system to
  create an online learning community
• Research the technical requirement of learning
  providers to support e and blended learning
• Initial research completed
• More detailed research is still ongoing

• Inform learning professionals of the Continuous
  Professional Development opportunities available
  via e and blended learning
• An area of Moodle has been created to facilitate
  this and is being populated

• Trial a model for shared curriculum delivery in
• one school sixth form

• In two vocational areas to support the delivery
  of work based learning
• In two specific groups of adult community
  learners
• In two FE curriculum area

• Identify how ICT can be used to tackle social
  exclusion and widen participation of 16 19 year
  olds in education and training.

• This work will be followed up post project as
  part of the work of the ICT Sub group for Learning

Project Activities

• 73 members of staff trained to develop
  pedagogically sound learning objects.
• 34 within Group 1 (core project participants)
• 39 within Group 2 (trained but not core project
  participants)
• 73 member of staff trained to use Moodle to
  deliver virtual lessons.
• All partners provided with appropriate equipment
  to facilitate the delivery of e and blended
  learning.

• All partners provided with access to software to
  create SCORM compliant learning objects.
• Further training being provided to project
  partners to create SCORM compliant learning
  objects schools training 26th March 2007.
• Server infrastructure purchased and installed to
  host the VLE.

• Content being developed and staff supported by
  team members.
• OCN Level 2 Online Student Induction resources
  created and currently being trialled
