  • Hot Technologies Color television matured,
    videotape playback became commonplace, cable TV,
    first PCs arrived.
  • Applications to Distance Education
  • Early telecourses with greater production values
    and network distribution, Cable franchising and
    PEG channels, PC based programmed instruction.
  • Colleges support system
  • Library/Media Directors led telecourse adoption
    coordination Bolvin, Keeler, Golden, Crossland,
    Thompson.
  • Telecourse Consortium formed dues supported,
    group licensing based on greatest use.

  • Hot Technologoes Television, VCRs and cable TV
    became widespread analog satellite TV PCs
    exploded along with software giving rise to
    Multimedia.
  • Application to D.E. Telecourses matured with
    support from national movement Annenberg,
    PBS/ALS, Dallas, etc, satellite
    teleconferencing grew in popularity.
  • Support system Washington CC Telecommunications
    Center formed at BCC, directed by Marlena
    Scordan-Weglin.
  • Telecourse and teleconference licensing/reporting.
  • Funded by CC system skim!
  • Telecourse Coord. Lindner, TP, Loreen, Maynard,
    McCabe, Keeler, Wesley, Colgan, Bachmann, Wolff,
    Carkeek, etc.

  • Hot Technologies Everything moved to digital
    PCs with GUI and high level languages, greater
    memory and storage, Internet tools, e-mail,
    listservs the Web 2-way ITV.
  • Application to D.E. e-mail with distant
    learners, web courses, CMSs like WebCT
    Blackboard, multimedia enhancements for audio,
    images, animation, graphics, video.
  • Colleges Support
  • Ann Suter replaced Marlena.
  • CCs became CTCs WCCCC became CTC, then CIS.
  • Center moved to CTC as Educational Technology
    Center, kept skim partner with KBTC, Instr.
    Computing Coordinator, led ETI/K-20 networks
    (data/video) projects.

  • Telecourse Coordinators adopted CODE as adhoc
    group name, crafted Bylaws sought formality with
    IC, reps. identified by Deans/VPs.
  • WAOL project funded from unspent ETI funds led
    by John Thompson housed at SFCC planned,
    developed launched 20 courses in 2 years.
  • VCC formed by group of colleges supported by
    10,000 annual dues coordinated with HECB, WSU
    and WAOL to submit LAAP and other successful
    grants.
  • ETC renamed Educational Products and Services as
    CIS reorganized eventually disbanded Ann Suter
    left system.

  • State funded grant match to launch the Virtual
    Campus SBCTC took leadership of D.E.
    coordination hired Suanne Carlson led LAAP
    project coordinated telecourses, coordinated
    development with WAOL.
  • IC formalized CODE as a Council name,
    constitution and bylaws requested.
  • CODE transformed into DLC and approved by IC in
    spring 1999.
  • Members come from varying areas of the colleges -
    Continuing Ed, Library, Media, faculty with DL
    coordination responsibilities picked up many of
    the folks we'd identify as "old timers" now in
    the DLC.

  • Hot Technologies Web applications, streaming
    media, Java and web programming languages,
    database connectivity fueled by e-commerce, I.P.
    based videoconferencing.
  • Application to D.E. Support for one-stop
    student point of contact more robust and easier
    to use CMSs textbook publishers create rich
    sets of resources.
  • Colleges Support
  • LAAP supports SBCTCs hiring an array of staff
  • Presidents appoint oversight group
  • Work progresses on many fronts VC organizational
    model legacy system integration course
    development staff training web site
    development beta testing etc.

  • Hot Technologies Web 2.0 applications adding
    social interaction among members to the level
    of virtual worlds better streaming media and
    YouTube-like sharing sites driving IPTV
    applications more Open Source programming
    activity a promise of the next gen online
    platform w/Bb-WebCT merger growth in
    availability of WiFi fueling computing mobility
    mobile phone-PDA enhancements and platform
    improvements Voice over IP and improved
    Web-conferencing applications push
    technologies like Podcasting using syndication
    to automate retrieval personalization with
    avatars and content aligned w/interests or
    browsing habits.

  • Application to D.E. CMSs are getting easier to
    customize and add functionality with add-ins
    Blogs, Wikis and Podcasting are happening outside
    DL programs in courses and support areas. CMS
    becoming enterprise IT services Increased cost
    of licensing driving renewed assessment of
    institutional need growth in DL activity keeping
    colleges FTES afloat, Private online
    institutions forming and thriving at levels
    K-Grad, increasing competition Military groups
    building enterprise online college coordination
    programs.

    online student service but not yet well
    integrated

    Web-enhanced and Hybrid bringing it into the
    mainstream.

    training support.

    use of technology in teaching and learning.
