Our ethos Two World class schools at the heart
of their communities

  • Our ethos
  • eLearning can give you the freedom and
flexibility to learn when and where you want and
    at your own pace.
  • We want to connect learning at school with
    learning at home.
  • We want all students to leave the MHF with the
capability to transfer and develop their
e-learning to support their transition into adult
    life.

4
  • Features of our laptop scheme
  • At the Malling School, every year 7 has a
    personal laptop.
  • All school software is available on the networked
    school profile.
  • Most students contribute 22 a month.
  • For those who dont contribute, we run a trolley
    for daily collectors.

  • Teaching and Learning needs to drive the scheme
  • Develop an e-learning strategy first with an
expectation that ICT will be integrated across
    all subject areas. Start small.
  • Provide the necessary training and support for
    all staff.
  • Ensure your Virtual Learning Environment is up
and running and that everyone is using it.
  • Visit other schools to pick their brains.

9
  • 2. Implement strategies to make sure students
    collect/bring their laptop to school
  • Daily monitoring.
  • Consequences built into your behaviour management
system if they dont comply. Consistency is key.
  • If students dont have a good reason to bring
their laptop to school, they wont bother!

10
  • 3. Finance
  • Investigate out-sourcing of payment collection
    and chasing of default payments
  • Communication still needs to take place between
    the school and finance company.
  • Employ a dedicated e-learning administrator to
oversee the operations . There needs to be a
    single point of contact.

  • 4. Repairs
  • Draw up a parental e-learning contract when
laptops are first handed out making sure all
    costs are transparent.
  • Ensure excess payments are received before
    repairs are carried out.
  • Negotiate on-site support with your laptop
    supplier.
  • Ensure service level agreements with supplier are
    in place for repair times.
  • Have a bank of temporary laptops available.

13
5. Choose robust, portable laptops
14
In summary
  • Has been of massive benefit to learners and
    teachers.
  • Many ways of achieving home access as long as
    some basic rules are followed.
  • Make sure that your strategy is driven by
learning not hardware and that your goals support
    the over-arching school ethos.
