Aim
Tilburg University
  • To gauge whether there is significant strategic
progress towards e-learning, virtual campuses or
e-universities in UK, based on the evidence of
    university web-sites.

3
Indicators searched for in reviewing web sites
Tilburg University
  • Are e-learning facilities accessible?
  • If not are they traceable reasonably easily from
    secondary pages?
  • Does the site tell us what courses are available
    by e-learning?
  • Does it offer us access/tasters without charge?
  • Is there an e-learning policy/strategy?

4
Results
Tilburg University
  • 103 websites reviewed, including 9 London
    colleges, and 7 Welsh institutions.

Comments on the results (2)
Tilburg University

Phases of e-learning adoption
Tilburg University
  • Level 1 Experimental
  • Level 2 Supportive environment
  • Level 3 Significant availability of
    interactive e-learning
  • Level 4 Predominantly web based

Strategic partnerships
Tilburg University
  • Universities form a consortium
  • Universities engage with an essentially private
    sector enterprise
  • A university effectively sub-contracts or
    outsources its e-learning

9
Conclusions types of e-learning strategy (1)
Tilburg University
  • Not yet developed its e-learning strategy
    (Possibly the majority)
  • E-learning as an enhancement of or improvement of
access to distance learning courses (Estimate
    20-40)
  • E-learning only as an enhancement of or support
for courses for campus based students (Estimate
    10-30)

10
Conclusions types of e-learning strategy (2)
Tilburg University
  • E-learning as an enhancement of or support for
courses for campus based students and for
    distance learning (Estimate 30-50)
  • In the market for the global distance learning
market and forming strategic alliances (Estimate
    10)
