OLT Lecture
  • OPENING COMMENTS
  • Welcome all candidates to the OLT and explain
    briefly that the OLT will be broken into 3
    parts
  • Explain that this is a requirement of the Dept
    Sport and Rec
  • This OLT is also required for both Sprint and
    Endurance Karting as the licence issued is an
    AKA Kart Racing Licence.

    lecture, advise and make sure you satisfy the

Laws for issuing of a Licence
  • With the changes to the State Laws re the issue
    of Go Kart Licences whether they be
    Practice/Racing licences or Endurance Karting
    day licences there is no reason why the OLT
    cannot be split into two separate parts First
    Part held in office or suitable venue where the
    initial Licence is to be issued.

  • Second Part to be held at the track, when
    licensee feels
  • they are ready to race.

AKA Manual
  • Explain that when they sign their Licence form
    they have agreed to abide by the rules as set by
    the AKA.

General Comment
  • Be aware of juniors in the group as their
    attention span will not be as long as a senior.
  • Make sure that the Juniors Parent/Guardian is
    present.
  • (Remember any one under the age of 18 in NSW
    requires a guardian present.
  • Check Licences - Date of Birth, Special
    Endorsements, Date of Issue
  • Point out kart racing can be dangerous on and off

  • the track for competitors and pit crew

What makes a good driver
  • ATTITUDES
  • Explain that they represent their sport and
  • should set a good example at the track
    and
  • when travelling on public roads to and
    from
  • the circuit
  • Treat the other drivers as you would expect
  • to be treated yourself

Officials
  • Must be shown respect, as they are
  • volunteers giving their time so you can
    race
  • Go through officials duties as per manual
  • Explain Stewards and Clerk of Course - the
  • importance of their duties. Respect
    them, as you, as drivers are being watched by
    them.
  • They may penalise you for rule
    infringements.

Breach of Rules
  • Explain example, from Chapter 5
  • These are most commonly used.
  • Explain that if they feel another competitor

  • has treated you unfairly on the track,
    report
  • this to the Clerk of Course not the
    Stewards,
  • and if need be they will act
    accordingly.
  • Deliberate contact is not allowed, as per
  • rules of the road

Other Rules
  • No smoking or alcohol in paddock and pit

  • areas.
  • No restarting during racing/Explain
  • Endurance restarting.
  • Never drive in the reverse direction.
  • Explain fuel as per chapter 22 in the manual.
  • Explain that karts must comply with the
  • Australian Kart Formula as per chapter
    25, and the additional class regulations.

Drivers Responsibility
  • Refer section on Protective Clothing/Explain
  • the helmet Rule 14.01.
  • Remind them that they are responsible for
  • their pit crew. Pit crew must be suitably

  • dressed including footwear. ie no thongs
    or
  • open type shoes.

  • Time circuit opens and what time to
    arrive so that you can be ready for racing.
  • Race Entries - when entries close.
  • Check in with Race Secretary to confirm
    details on race entry and race number.
  • Permit for race meeting, Supplementary

  • Scrutineering.
  • Drivers Briefing - all drivers must attend.

Drivers Responsibility (Cont).
  • Explain they will meet Clerk of Course,
    Stewards and find out about other regulations
    for the meeting. Midgets, Rookies and Juniors
    should take their guardian with them
  • Hand in licence to Clerk of Course at
    completion of Drivers Briefing whilst racing
    on a Provisional Licence to have P
    endorsements and also for drivers seeking a
    licence upgrade.
  • Starting procedures, computer grids, finals,
    etc
  • Point out whether practice is on race
    days
  • Provisionals must practice prior to racing

Drivers Responsibility (cont).
  • Visor must be down at all times whilst
    driving on circuit. Dont want to get a rock or
    dust in their eyes. Ensure race suit is
    properly zipped up.
  • Show and explain how to leave the race track
    after race by raising one arm.
  • Explain how to drive back into pits. ie slow
    and carefully as ingrid is not a race circuit.
  • Explain weighing procedures.

  • Explain Chapter 13
  • Explain One Event Licences (Endurance Karting
    Only)
  • P Platers cannot start a team an Endurance
    Event (Chapter 51 of the
  • 2007 Manual)
  • Explain in detail the correct procedure to
    advance Midgets/Rookies/Juniors/Seniors.

Types of Practice Days
  • Private Practice
  • They must fill out Indemnity forms/sign
    waivers and pay practice fees. Failure to do
    so mean there is no personal accident insurance
    cover.
  • Controlled Practice
  • Driver completes as above but officials are
    on course and run practice sessions.

  • Official Practice days
  • When you may start engines and/or practice
    on
  • circuit.
  • Scrutineer kart before entering circuit.
    (Explain only at club organised days. Not
    necessary on private practice days)
  • Seniors must never drive on the circuit with
    Midgets, rookies and juniors, etc.
  • This is a regulation of the Department of
    Sport, Recreation and Racing.

Track Walk
  • Walk around circuit. (Using Track Map)
  • Show and explain grid spot on dummy grid.
    Be up at dummy grid waiting one race before
    their race, in case the race before them gets
    sent back for re-grid.
  • Explain when you can restart. ( ie practice,
    roll up laps.)
  • Absolutely no restarting during racing.
  • Dont cross track to get back to pits until
    race is finished.

Track Walk (cont).
  • You may restart after last kart has passed
    Finish Line, just ask permission from flag point
    to be sure it is safe.
  • Explain where to move kart to safe place, if
    they spin during race. ie spin on inside of
    corner, move kart to inside of track. If spin
    on outside of corner, move kart well away from
    race track. Point out good idea to raise hands
    to warn other drivers that you have spun. Stay
    in kart until all competitors have passed and it
    is safe to get out of kart. Suggest good idea
    to leave helmet on until you get back to
    pits.

Make drivers aware of
  • Point out flag points.
  • Explain racing lines.
  • Explain how to pass another kart and where it
    can be done.
  • Do not force another competitor off a race
    line.
  • Passing moves should be done without
    contact.
  • Remind them of yellow flag rule and red flag
    rule.

Breakdown Lane
  • Show and explain where mechanical repair area
    is. Raise hand whenever you are leaving
    circuit. Look for a direction from official
    once carried out repair and when it is safe to
    rejoin race.
  • Emphasise rejoining with safety and do not
    suddenly move from inside of circuit to outside
    of circuit when returning to pits.

Pre Race Inspection
  • Explain the importance of walking around
    any track they have never driven around before.
    This gives you a good idea where to brake and
    apex of corners. Plus look around for run off
    areas in case the track becomes blocked due to
    an accident.
  • Point out dangerous corners on the track. ie
    walls, kerbs, etc.
  • Point out starting procedures. ie flag or
    lights to start race. They must be in two
    lines. Show where acceleration and Baulk Lines
    are on track.

Scrutineering
  • Bring karts and all safety gear.
  • Have patience. This is possibly the first
    time their karts have been scrutineered.
  • Go over the kart and point out problems with
    kart.
  • Ensure they have a P plate displayed on the
    front and rear of kart.
  • Try to pass on some useful tip like gear
    ratios, tyre pressure, etc.

Scrutineering (cont).
  • Check helmets for condition and Standards,
    and then check them when they put it on for
    correct fitting.
  • Point out helmets are the most important
    piece of safety equipment they will ever own,
    and must comply with the relevant standards and
    regulations.

Practical Session
  • Explain how a kart should be started by
    their pit crew and method.
  • Send them out onto circuit for a short
    practice session. Rookies/Midgets, juniors,
    seniors. Organise them on the grid, then send
    them onto circuit for a couple of timed laps,
    individually.

Observed Race
  • Group them into appropriate groups,
    Rookies/Midgets, juniors, Senior National,
    Senior Clubman. Send them out in a simulated
    race. Explain to them again, before leaving
    grid, the starting procedures. Explain to grid
    1 that he/she sets the pace predicted by the
    starter. Show them flag signals and comment on
    their response to them. Evaluate their ability
    to race with other competitors, passing moves,
    etc.

Return to Lecture Area
  • Before commencing ask if there are any
    questions if not then-
  • Hand out questionnaire and give them
    sufficient time to complete it. (Ask if anyone
    has a problem with reading the questionnaire).
  • Commence written test. Guardians may assist
    Midget and Rookie Drivers.

Final assessment/Debriefing
  • Discuss the drivers being tested with all your
    observers. Pick out good points and results.
    Highlight any areas of concern.
  • Be aware of the need to be supportive during
    drivers debriefing.
  • If driver is adequately prepared to take
    his/her place on the grid, then sign the
    drivers licence and fill in the details on the
    OLT Return Form

Final assessment (cont).
  • Should a driver NOT be adequately skilled,
    let them down lightly explain areas of conduct
    /skill requiring attention do this in private to
    avoid embarrassment.
  • If possible, offer further tuition or explain
    where help is forthcoming.
  • Do not pass drivers whom have not achieved a
    90 pass in the questionnaire.
  • Advise drivers of their results and if
    necessary reinforce areas of concern.

Closing Comment
  • Thank all for their attendance and
    congratulate all as a group if they all passed.
    If some did not pass, then congratulate
    individually, and explain to those who failed
    the reasons in private and encourage them to
    try again.
