History of Asbestos

• Naturally occurring mineral that separates into
  strong, very fine fibers
• Extremely durable
• Very heat resistant
• Great construction material

Properties of Asbestos

• Breaks into microscopic fibers
• Easily inhaled
• Penetrates, remains in body for many years
• Can cause lung cancer, mesothelioma, and
  asbestosis 20-40 years after exposure
• Since 1900, over 30 million tons of asbestos were
  put in place

  regulated facilities

• Abatement training and certification
• All trainers must be accredited by EPA/State
• All individuals must be certified
• ID of dangerous levels of lead
• Paint 0.5 by weight (5000 ppm) 1.0 mg/sq.
  centimeter (XRF)
• Dust 40 ?g/sq. foot for floors 250 ?g/sq. foot
  for window sills
• Soil 400 ppm bar soil in play area 1200 ppm
  bar soil in rest of yard
