2
What Is Probability?
  • Probability is the chance that an event will
    occur.
  • For example, what is the probability that you
will roll a 4 (using one standard 6-sided die)?
  • One out of six
  • This can be written as a fraction 1/6
  • It may also be written as 16.

3
A Short Way to Write Probability
  • Probability of rolling a six
  • Probability of getting tails
  • Probability of choosing a red marble
  • P (6)
  • P (tails)
  • P (red)

4
The Boundaries of Probability
  • If an event has a probability of zero, this event
    will not occur.
  • If an event has a probability of 1, there is 100
    chance that it will occur.
  • Probability is usually between 0 and 1

5
Probability When Is It Used?
  • The concept of probability can be used in many
    ways
  • Dice
  • Coins
  • Cards
  • Marbles
  • Seating Arrangements
  • Games (like Yahtzee)

6
Probability and Dice
7
Probability and Dice Questions
  • P (sum of 12)
  • P (sum of 1)
  • P (rolling a 1 first)
  • P (sum of 7)
  • Why is 7 considered a lucky number?

8
Lucky Sevens
9
Probability and Coins
  • When a quarter is flipped
  • P (heads)
  • P (tails)
  • P (heads and tails)
  • P (heads or tails)

10
Its Time for a Quiz
  • What is probability?
  • What does a probability of zero mean?
  • What does a probability of 1 mean?
  • Where is probability used in the real world?

11
Key
  • The chance that an event will occur
  • P (0) means that the event will not occur.
  • P (1) means that the event will certainly occur.
  • Used in games, with coins, predicting weather,
    and other situations
