Title: Probability and Outcomes

1
Probability and Outcomes
  • By Mr. Bales

2
Objective
  • By the end of this lesson, you will be able to
    describe probability.
  • Standard 4SDAP2.2 - Students will express
    outcomes of experimental probability situations
verbally and numerically (e.g., 3 out of 4, or
    3/4)
  • Standard 4SDAP2.1 - Students will represent all
possible outcomes for a simple probability
situation in an organized way (e.g., tables,
    grids, tree diagrams)

3
Introduce
  • I have a bowl full of red and green shapes. (20
red shapes and 5 green shapes)
  • If I reach into the bowl without looking, do you
think I will get a red shape or a green shape?
    Why?
  • In this bowl, I have 10 orange, 5 yellow, and 5
    green.
  • What are the chances that I will get a white
    shape?
  • Now, in this bowl, I have 12 yellow shapes.
  • What is the chance I will get a yellow shape?

4
Get Ready to Learn
  • Only Lukas knew the colors of the marbles in a
bag. He asked Alex to reach in and choose a
    marble without looking.
  • What color do you think Alex will grab?

5
Outcome and Probability
  • An outcome is a result in an experiment.
  • The chance that an outcome will occur is its
    probability.
  • The words certain, likely, equally likely,
unlikely, and impossible can describe probability.

Describe Outcomes
  • Describe how likely it is that Taylor will choose
a yellow marble from Skylars bag.
  • There are 8 marbles in the bag, and two are
    yellow.
  • In the bag, less than half of the marbles are
yellow. So, its unlikely that Taylor will choose
    a yellow marble.

Describe Outcomes
  • Money - The table shows the coins Maddie has in
her pocket. Suppose she drops a coin on the
    ground.
  • Describe the probability that the coin she
    dropped is a dime.
  • There are 8 coins in Maddies pocket. Of those
    coins, five are dimes.

Coin Frequency
Quarter 1
Dime 5
Penny 2
TOTAL 8
Since most of the coins are dimes, it is likely
that Maddie dropped a dime.
