  • We have been using Typewell for more than 5 years
  • Started with Serial Cable connection
  • Problems ranging from long cables and 1-1.5 hour
    laptop batteries

  • OSU is using Dell Latitude D620 with extra
    battery in media bay (8 hours non-stop)
  • Whenever possible purchase a laptop with
    broadband ready

  • Only Windows Mobile 5 works with Typewell
  • Buy pocket pc if you can replace the battery

  • Premium Transcriber and Reader license

  • 1 Broadband Wireless Card
  • 1 Wireless Microphone

Setting Up Equipment
  • NO screen saver
  • NO password
  • NO login screen
  • Full power (in Windows power options)
  • Hibernate option is ON.

Possible Problems
  • Typewell program only allows 4 IP Addresses.
  • Case 1 Two transcribers in the classroom with
    conflicting IP Address
  • Case 2 Two or more classes in the same building
    at the same time
  • Case 3 Loosing connection in certain building

Case 1 Conflicting IP Addresses
  • Label each laptop with set of IP Address
  • Make a chart and see if there is a possibility of
    conflicting IP Addresses
  • Recommend transcribers to check the laptop IP
    Address before starting up the system
  • Use software we develop to change IP Address
    easily

Case 2 Conflicting Classes
  • This can cause students in different classes to
    see wrong transcripts.
  • Use software we develop to change wireless SSID
    easily.

Case 3 Losing Connection
  • Building materials not conducive to wireless
    signal
  • Sit closer to the student

Setting Up Remote Connection
  • Wireless microphone will connect to a laptop
  • If wireless internet is not available in the
    building, try laptop with broadband to connect to
    the internet
  • Connect Typewell using Skype

Things to Do
  • Remember to check wireless quality / signal
  • Try to do Typewell and Skype remotely with the
    outside transcribers
  • At OSU, we have 100 successful rate every time.

  • Finding out if there is a way for inter-schools
    or universities can share transcribers.
  • We want to maximize our transcribers hours in the
    classroom and outside.
