Title: The problem of industrial safety
1The problem of industrial safety
2The scope
- The scale of accidents and incidents in industry
- EU policy in increasing industrial safety
3The problem of industrial safety 1/11
Scale of accidents and incidents in industry
- The cost of accidents and occupational diseases
in EU-15 countries ranges between - 2,6...3,8 of GNP (Gross National Product)
- Investments of EU-25 countries in the science
- 1,86 GNP
US investments in science 2,66 GNP (2002),
Japans 3,18 GNP (2003)

4The problem of industrial safety 2/11
Industrial accidents in EU-15 countries (2001)
- One worker died every 2 hours
- One worker became a victim of accident every 5
seconds - 4900 fatalities occurred in 7,6 mln. accidents at
work - 4,9 mln. accidents resulted in more the 3 days of
absence from work

5The problem of industrial safety 3/11
Major accidents in EU
- 30 major accidents happen each year
- within the industry sectors covered by SEVESO 2
directive
SEVESO 2 Directive 96/82/EC this directive is
aimed at the prevention of major accidents, which
involve dangerous substances, and the limitation
of their consequences for man and environment,
with a view to ensuring high levels of protection
throughout the EU in a consistent and effective
way

Explosion in Toulouse (21th Sept 2001)
- The largest accident in the history of French
industry - Explosion of ammonium nitrates in the AZF plant
belonging to the TotalFinaElf corporation. - The blast wave was equivalent to an explosion of

- Consequences of explosion were visible in the
