Mudslides
  • By DBRDT and AMD

2
What is a mudslide?
  • A mudslide is a thick mixture of sediments and
    water flowing down a slope.

3
How does it happen?
  • Mudslides happen when gravity causes mass to
    slide downhill.
  • The deposits usually spread out in a fan shape.

4
When does it occur?
  • Mudslides usually occur in dry areas where there
are thick layers of dry sediments.
  • When heavy rains fall in the areas, water mixes
with sediments and becomes thick and pasty.

5
Prevention and Protection
  • Contact local authorities about emergency and
    evacuation plans.
  • Develop emergency and evacuation plans for your
    family and business.
  • One way to prevent mudslides is to plant
    vegetation.

6
Some examples
  • This mudslide happened in Samoa, Pago Pago -
  • Some different mudslides-

A Recent Headline from ABC 7 News
SANTA CLARITA It was deja vu all over again for
residents of the Polynesian mobile home park in
Santa Clarita.    Story Images Heavy rains
caused more flooding near the 150-unit trailer
park, which was also flooded by storms last
month. The road leading into the park near San
Fernando Road and Sierra Highway was closed to
traffic for a time, but no evacuation was
ordered, according to a lieutenant at the Santa
Clarita Sheriff's Station. Crews using heavy
equipment worked to divert the floodwaters in an
effort to reopen the road to the mobile home
park. Mobile home park resident Brian Bretches
told ABC7 Eyewitness News that he planned to stay
put in his mobile home, despite losing his
electricity. He was evacuated during last month's
rainstorm. "It's deja vu all right," Bretches
told ABC7 Eyewitness News. "These guys are
busting their butts out here, trying to move all
this mud, and it just comes right back like
nothing. It's going to happen every time ... I've
got nowhere to go." Some residents complained
that repairs to a bridge had not been completed.
