Flooding in Haiti and The Dominican Republic

• Haiti and The Dominican Republic are two
  countries that share the island of Hispaniola, in
  the Southern Caribbean.
• Much of the severe flood damage has occurred
  30-miles from Haitis capital of Port-Au-Prince.
  In the Dominican Republic, the town of Jimani has
  seen the most severe effects.
• In Haitian border towns, U.S. and Canadian troops
  handed out food to residents seeking help.
• Authorities are assessing damages

Effects on Cities

• Storms wiped out villages
• Some cities were under ten feet of water
• Mudslides swept homes away
• The area has been declared a disaster area

Effects on the People

• Experts predict the death-toll could reach 1,000
• Some 450 bodies have been recovered from Haiti
  alone
• The flood left many homeless and hungry
• Some of the Haitians who lost relatives are
  scared to identify bodies because they have been
  living in the country illegally.

Sending Help

• Sending aid is of high national interest.
• U.S. and Canadian troops are helping clear areas
  and feed those in need.
• The UN is also involved.
• The American Red Cross is playing a crucial role.
