The WBCSD is a coalition of some 160
international companies united by a shared
commitment to sustainable development through the
three pillars of economic growth, ecological
balance and social progress. Our members are
drawn from 30 countries and are active in over 20
major industrial sectors.
The WBCSD also benefits from a thriving regional
network representing over 1,000 business leaders
in developing countries and nations in transition.

- Good recognition of and relations with key
decision-makers and stakeholders, including Glion
dialogues - Global standard on GHG measurement and reporting
in collaboration with the WRI - Capacity building on CDM and emissions trading

blocks for policy instruments - Explore pathways toward a low-carbon future
- Continue GHG Protocol work, adding accounting for

- Achievements
- Published set of case studies to illustrate
successful public-private partnerships to

deliver water to the poor and meet the UN
Millennium Goal - Participate in Prepcoms for WSSD in 2002 and for

15Natural Resources Biodiversity
- Achievements
- Scoping meetings have occurred with IUCN,
Earthwatch, and Conservation International as
partners in promoting the business case for
biodiversity. A draft report is complete - 23 WBCSD member companies have joined in an
ad-hoc working group to revise the report
- Future plans
- Draft, edit and gain approval of the revised
report in time for WSSD in 2002

16Innovation and Technology
- Achievements
- A working group on ITSS was launched to
understand and effectively manage the
far-reaching implications of technology
development. Work is being carried out in
cooperation with NGOs, academia, government and
business - Contributed to thinking and awareness of key
international organizations

- Suggest options for enhancing the development
process to include stakeholder input and external
learnings - Create a shared input with key stakeholders on
Intellectual Property Rights in biotechnology for
Earth Summit 2002

- Achievements
- Will give guidance to member companies in their
reporting and communication on sustainability
performance activities - Construction of a policy paper on the GRI
endorsed by the membership

their own specific needs - Establish a web-based product that will give

governments, businesses, forest landowners and
other stakeholders to resolve issues related to
illegal logging and forest certification. - Work with IFIR to develop and implement Mutual

(MMSD)

- Largest sectoral multistakeholder process
- Substantial engagement with many of the principal
