Understanding how a scanner functions
4
What is a Scanner
  • A device that will take a snapshot of whatever
is placed in the platen (or scanner bed)
  • Uses bits and bytes to store the converted data
on to your PC as a digital image file (just like
    a digital camera)
  • Operates by moving a sensor containing a single
row of light-sensitive pixels across a certain
area. These pixels will register the light value
of the image one line at a time. The data is
sent to the computer an a copy of the image is
    rebuilt by the scanning program.

5
What is a flatbed scanner
6
Flatbed Scanner
  • A long narrow tray on which you place your
    document or photo.
  • The scanner head or sensor will travel along the
length of the bed in order to create the digital
    image.
  • Newer models connect using USB, but older models
may still use a parallel cable.

7
How to choose the correct scanner resolution
8
High resolution Scanners
  • Will capture greater detail in the images
(especially the lightest and darkest portions)
  • You can scan small images and print them at a
larger size and still maintain the clarity.
  • Are more expensive than the lower-resolution
    scanners.

9
Things to Remember
  • Resolution dependent on the speed and accuracy
of the motor that moves the sensor (containing
light-sensitive pixels) past the document on the
    flatbed.
  • Scanners are rated by its resolution or the speed
in which they can convert documents into digital
    images.
  • A scanners rating is the optical resolution of
the imaging system by the resolution of the step
    motor. (1200x2400dpi)

Shopping for a scanner
11
What to look for?
  • Resolution (rate by which they convert documents
    into digital images).
  • Color Depth listed in bits per pixel.
Inexpensive scanner maybe 24-bit or they can
digitize as many as 16.7 million colors. More
    expensive

models can work as 30, 36, or even 48 bits per
pixel (billions of colors)
