2Natural Resource Museum Collection
- From the NPS Collections manual, a Natural
Resource Museum Collection is - A collection comprised of permanently retained
specimens and samples taken from the living and
nonliving components of the natural world and
field data, records, and reports generated by the
collecting and research activities.
3Management Policies 2001
Natural Resource Museum Collections consist
of field data, objects, specimens, and features
obtained for preservation during inventory,
monitoring, research, and study projects,
together with associated records and reports,
will be managed over the long term within the
museum collection

- To store IM products in archival facilities
which bests preserves the products for long term - To have ready access to the products
- To have the products cataloged according to the
Parks involved - To have the metadata available for researchers
- To meet the requirements for a Natural Resource

- NPS Archeological Centers
6Western Archeological and Conservation Center
(WACC)
- Mandated to handle NR
- NARA compliant building (longevity of archived
products) - Can store the project deliverables in one
location (digital data, analog data, specimens,
photos, etc.) - Have the taxonomic and collections management
expertise - NPS facility
- Products can be retrieved easily
7Status
- September meeting scheduled with WACC
- From the IM Data Management Workshop in Tucson
in May 2003, approximately half of the IM
Networks are interested in pursuing an archival
solution with the Archeological Centers. Others
currently had a working solution with a park in
their network or a private institution. - Per survey, most networks do not have an
archival plan, or are developing one currently. - Proposal for Archival with WACC is being drafted
