2What is Social Studies?
- The education of students in the area of Social
Studies requires the integration of several
different disciplines including the study of
culture and society, history, economics,
geography, and civics and government.
- The National Council for Social Studies states
social studies promotes knowledge of and
involvement in civic affairs. And because civic
issues--such as health care, crime, and foreign
policy--are multidisciplinary in nature,
understanding these issues and developing
resolutions to them require multidisciplinary
education. These characteristics are the key
defining aspects of social studies.
3How are we to achieve those goals?
- Because social studies is itself a
multidisciplinary study, we as educators must
take a multidisciplinary approach to the teaching
of social studies. What better way to achieve
this than through the use of technology?
Technology gives us the opportunity to bring
together so many different sources and
instructional approaches.
4How can technology help our students to become
literate in the area of Social Studies?
- Through our lesson planning
- Through the use of real world experiences
- Through exposure to and interaction with their
world and the larger world outside of their
neighborhoods

6Real World Experiences
- Technology can be used to give our students
experiences that we could not provide on the
classroom. Technology can connect our students
to people and places from around the world.
7Real World Experiences
Walk with Neil Armstrong on the moon!
Be there as the Declaration is signed!
Meet Ben Franklin and other notable figures from
our history!
8Exploring The World
See any neighborhood from space!
- Technology enables our students to visit the
world without ever leaving their classroom.
Go on Expeditions around the world!
Hop on the bus to see Historic Places all over
the world!
9Social Studies and Technology
- Social Studies learning involves the integration
of several disciplines, the application of
critical thinking skills of our students,
decision-making skills, and the ability to
consider different cultural perspectives.
Integrating technology into our social studies
curriculum can enhance the acquisition of those
skills by exposing them to places, people, and
experiences they may not have within the
classroom.
