Overview
  • Problem statement
  • Background information
  • Product design specifications (PDS)
  • Design Alternatives
  • Proposed Design
  • Future Aspects
  • Questions

4
Problem statement
  • Design Problem Allow multiple students to
observe an ear image from an otoscope at once
  • Used in teaching
  • Digital in nature
  • Little or no distortion

5
Background Information
  • Current accuracy of 25
  • Need to examine color, light reflex, ear drum
    position, motion, landmarks
  • Welch-Allyn Otoscope
  • Current technique uses a dual eyepiece
  • Only one student at a time
  • Often hard to see into
  • Image is reversed

6
Current Technology
  • Current Systems Available
  • Dual Eyepiece, Video Systems
  • 5000

7
Key Design Aspects
  • Multiple Viewers at once
  • Not hinder Viewing, high resolution
  • Must not harm the client or patient
  • Easy to use
  • Easily transportable
  • Under 200

8
Design Alternatives
  • Camera directly in ear
  • Camera inside of a current otoscope
  • Lens-to-eyepiece adapter (LE-Adapter)
  • Combined with a digital camera
  • Combined with a small video camera

9
Camera directly in ear
10
  • Advantages
  • Light weight
  • Easy to use
  • Disadvantages
  • Poor performance cannot perform required tasks
  • Expensive for small enough camera

11
Camera directly in Otoscope
12
  • Advantages
  • Light weight
  • Ergonomically shaped
  • Projects image of ear on screen
  • Has same performance as current otoscope
  • Disadvantages
  • Very Expensive
  • Camera small enough w/ good enough resolution
  • Very hard to build

lens
LE-Adapter showing side that fits onto eyepiece
15
  • Advantages
  • Versatile
  • Otoscope can be used w/o the camera
  • Projects image of ear on a screen
  • Can be used w/ a digital camera or small video
    camera
  • Cost effective and easy to build
  • Disadvantages
  • Added weight to system
  • Could be bulky

16
Design Matrix
poor average excellent
17
Future Problems
  • Unaffected viewing?
  • Resolution?
  • Distortion?
  • Too bulky?
  • Too heavy?

18
Future Aspects
  • Consider design ideas presented by rest of the
group and decide on best one
  • Build a prototype
  • Test prototype in order to verify that it
    satisfies all design specifications
