Title: Creating Online Instructional Videos

1
Creating Online Instructional Videos
  • Professor Mary Sue Donsky
  • Professor Adrianne Wortzel
  • Karen Lundstrem, Director of Instructional
    Technology

2
Cognitive rationale for videos
  • Appeals to variety of learning styles, other than
    textual print .
  • For example, those with auditory learning styles
can remember names but forget faces.
  • Visual-spatial learning styles remember faces but
    forget names.
  • Video has sound and visuals.

3
Say and show what you mean.
  • Two tracks of learning visual-spatial and verbal
tasks run on parallel tracks and do not interfere
with each other because they are separate systems
of working memory. Since the two channels are
separate, it makes sense to teach to both of
    them.
  • A video with an audio track is a good example of
    teaching to both channels.

4
Best choices for video
  • Case studies Legal Assistant Studies example
  • Demonstrations shoot as tight as possible to
    show the procedure
  • Scenario/ slice of life

5
Problematic choices
  • Talking heads (audio alone would work well and
    not take up bandwidth)
  • Complicated scenes with much motion (digitizing
the motion can cause loss of quality when video
    is compressed)
  • Close-ups of BlackBoards and chalkboards. It is
    better to insert digitized type.

6
DONT
  • Dont shoot in the dark. Use overhead lights if
    possible.
  • Dont use digitized special effects for zooms,
close-ups, etc. (Use the camera and take a
    close-up with the camera instead.)

7
Writing the script
  • Plan each scene in advance.
  • Allow room for some spontaneity, which can occur
    among cast.
  • Dont plan on jumping between a wide range of
shots (long shots, close-ups). The less motion in
digital video, the better the quality. However,
some cuts and dissolves can be used, so there can
    be some changes.

8
Digital camcorders
  • Choose according to price and needs
  • The JVC GR-DV2000U is just one camcorder at a
good price and is used for demonstration purposes
throughout this presentation. It includes an
optical zoom, auto and manual focus, and other
    good features.

9
Wide-angle lens
  • The Wide-angle lens is invaluable for capturing a
wider area without having to pull the camera back.

10
Using the camcorder
  • The Auto setting on the camcorder should be
    sufficient for most instructional videos.
  • The manual setting allows for more advanced
settings, such as changing the focus.

11
IEEE 1394
  • The IEEE 1394 cable, also known as Firewire or
Sony i.Link, will be used to connect the
camcorder to the computer so that you can import
    the video.

12
Editing the video
  • There are many choices for editing.
  • Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro are popular
    editing tools.
  • Apples iMovie is a simple, free, and fast
editing tool. (It comes included with the Mac.)

13
Editing in iMovie
  • Switch iMovie to edit mode
  • Use this switch to change to edit mode
  • Clips from video should be on the right of the
    iMovie screen, on the shelf.
  • Copy the desired clips and Paste onto the
timeline on the bottom of the screen.

14
Editing in iMovie (continued)
  • To cut a clip
  • Point the Playhead to the desired position
  • Go to the edit menu Choose split video clip at
    Playhead
  • Time
  • 000000 minutes seconds frames
  • 30 frames 1 second, 15 frames ½ second

15
Titles, Transitions and Effects in iMovie
  • Use the toolbar to switch between the clips
titles and transitions and other effects
  • Choose the desired transition title or effect and
    drag it to the timeline
  • Note The title and transition will take a little
    time to render
  • Titles
  • Choose Titles, the desired title ? type in the
    words ? drag to timeline
  • If you make a mistake, reselect Title Clip, make
    changes and hit Update

16
Exporting the Video from iMovie to QuickTime
  • Select File ? Export ? Export To QuickTime ?
Format Expert Settings ? Export Movie to
    QuickTime Movie
  • For High Resolution Use DSL/Cable Medium
  • For Low Resolution Use Modem
  • Click Save

17
Export to Digital Video for other compressions
  • Select File ? Export ? Export To QuickTime ?
Format Expert Settings ? Export Movie to DV
Stream, Use Default Settings, Click Save

18
Compression
  • Compression is used so that dial-up users can
watch the video on the Web.
  • iMovie will compress videos, but only for
    QuickTime.
  • Premiere can use the Cleaner plug-in to compress
    the video in various formats.
  • iMovie and Premiere already have pre-set
    compressions.

19
Compression High Resolution
  • The file size with high resolution can run around
    5 Megabyte per minute.
  • High resolution is for users who have a faster
    connection to the Internet.
  • A good preset choice for high resolution is Video
for LAN, cable modem, or xDSL in the Windows
    Media Export.

20
Compression Low Resolution
  • The file size with low resolution can run around
    1 Megabyte per minute.
  • Mainly for users with slower Internet
    connections, such as 56K modems.
  • A good preset choice for low resolution is Video
for dial-up modems or single channel ISDN for
    Windows Media Export.
