3MISSION STATEMENT

- To increase the participation of Latinos in
philanthropy. - To increase philanthropic dollars to Latino
communities both within the United States and in
Latin America. - To foster policy change through philanthropy to
enhance equity and inclusiveness.
4OBJECTIVES OF THE FUNDERS COLLABORATIVE
- To increase the net amount of philanthropic
dollars flowing to Latino nonprofits - To strengthen the organizational capacity of
small- to medium-sized Latino nonprofits - To increase philanthropys understanding of
Latino nonprofits, the communities they serve,
and the role they play in civil society - And to foster leadership among Latino nonprofits
that incorporates a vision of inclusiveness and
collaboration.

8CAPACITY BUILDING GRANTS
- The Funders Collaborative only awards Capacity
Building Grants. - What is Capacity Building?
- Activities that contribute to the development
and growth of organizational systems and
infrastructure.
9Examples of capacity building projects include
- Strategic planning
- Building fundraising capacity (especially
diversification of funding base) - Evaluation
- Technology
- Staff and board development
- Facilities planning/feasibility study
- Cultural competence development
- Financial management
- Communications/marketing
- Building capacity for coalitions and advocacy
- Human resources management

- Being strategic about the development of a
nonprofit organizations capacity and long-term
sustainability are crucial in this challenging

11ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
- Annual operating budget under 2 Million
- Non-profit under 501(c)3 or have a fiscal sponsor
with 501(c)3 status - Latino-Led, meet at least one criterion under
each category
12CHICAGO SITE CRITERIA
- To be considered for funding in this round,
organizations must be based in and serve in the
Chicago Metro Area (Chicago and surrounding
suburban areas are included.) - Grant are for 1 year up to 25,000.
- Average grant will be 15,000
- If a portion of the project funding will be used
for a consultant, at least 2 consultant bids are
required with the grant proposal.

What else does a Funders Collaborative Grant
Provide?
- Semi-annual Convenings
- Focus on capacity building topics
- Examples Grassroots fundraising, strategic
planning, board development, etc - Networking Opportunities
- Connections with other Latino nonprofits in the
Chicago Metro area and the Midwest region - Leadership Conference
- Every two years, HIP organizes a national
conference for the leaders of Latino nonprofits

15GUIDELINES FOR A STRONG PROPOSAL
- A well-thought-out capacity-building project
- Clear, prioritized needs
- Appropriate leadership for the project
- Clear objectives and activities, with a timeline
and measurable outcomes - A plan for sustaining the increased capacity
after the end of the project - A realistic, appropriate budget

- Complete the Organizational Assessment Tool.
- Decide which type of capacity-building grant
would best serve your organization. - Make sure your organization is registered on our
private website. (If you have questions about
this or have lost your user name and password,

18STEP 1 - DOWNLOAD
Please Do This Now Underneath the area titled
1. My Full Proposal Templates, click each of the
files (1 through 4) and download them to your
computer.
19Download each of these documents onto your
computer 1. HIP Full Proposal Template 2.
Full Proposal Budget Form 2A. Instructions for
Project Budget Form 3. Full Proposal Org Budget
Template 4. Endorsement Form For each
document, Save As an acronym for the name of your
organization dash the name of the document. (For
example Latinos Working in Americas document 2
should be named LWA- Budget Form.) Then, work
on these documents offline.
STEP 2- SAVING INSTRUCTIONS

20STEP 3 - UPLOAD
Please Do This When You Are Finished Working on
Your Proposal 1) Log back in to the website by
going to http//private.hiponline.org/Sub
missions/Pages/SubmitProposal.aspx 2) Enter
your username and password.
3) Underneath the area titled 2. Submit My Full
Proposal, click on the New Item button. Do
not click Submit My Full Proposal this will not
work and it will disrupt the submission system.
21STEP 4- UPLOADING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Fill in the required fields signaled by a red
star. 2. When you are ready to attach all
five of your proposal documents, click Attach
File, browse your computers files for the Full
Proposal (FP). Click the OK button . Then click
Attach File again. Browse for the FP Budget,
click OK, and repeat until all five online
submission documents are attached. 3. Scroll to
the bottom of the page. There, you should see all
five documents. At this point, hit the Save and
Close button

22STEP 5- UPLOADING CHECKLISTS
- IMPORTANT!
- Documents must be uploaded one by one.
- It is best to upload all five in one sitting once
the entire proposal is complete. - Once you have finished uploading, click Save
Close you will see a folder with your
organizations files.

23STEP 6 HARDCOPY CHECKLIST
Make sure two copies of these documents are sent
and postmarked by Friday, May 1, 2009
- Signed Endorsement Form
- Copy of a current 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status
letter, or that of the fiscal sponsor. - Financials most recent audited financial
statements, if available. If not, most recent
unaudited financials or Form 990. If you are
fiscally sponsored, submit statements for the
fiscal sponsor also. - Memos of understanding, if submitting a request
for collaboration among agencies. - Fiscal Sponsor Agreement, if applicable.
