CAT DISSECTION DAY 1
  • Before Lab session starts you will need
  • Metal Tray and Cat In The Bag
  • A sharpened scalpel and 2 rubber bands
  • Each of you should have an apron and be gloved.
  • Cat Out Of The Bag
  • Start with making a horizontal cut through 1
    layer of the bag (at the cephalic end). Leave
    the other layer intact. If you do this it will
    be easier to put away.
  • Pour any Cat Juice down the drain.
  • Pull the Cat Out Of The Bag.
  • Place Cat on tray Dorsal side down
  • Begin your Dissection with a Vertical Cut of the
    Median Plane on the Anterior side
  • Start your Cut at the Throat region of the Cat
    you will see a cut has been made through the hide
    there.
  • Continue your vertical cut along the Median Plane
    of the torso until you reach the Cats tail.
  • Be careful that you dont cut too deep. If it
    looks like Chicken it must be
  • It is easier if your partner grabs the Cats hide
    while to other partner cuts with the scalpel.
  • Cat Back In The Bag
  • Place the metal tray with Cat on the tray in the
    Cut Bag (Wet Bag). Slide the metal tray out and
    leave the Cat In The bag (Wet Bag).
  • Secure the (Wet Bag) with a rubber band
  • Place the second bag (Dry Bag) over the (Wet Bag)
    and secure with a rubber band.
  • Place the bagged Cat back in the container with
    LID closed.
  • Clean Up Procedure
  • Rinse the metal tray and scalpel in sink and put
    away.
  • Scrub the lab table with a disinfectant.
  • Take gloves off (place in garbage) and apron
    away.
  • Any other clothing should be placed on top off
    your Cat bin.
  • Wash hands and arms thoroughly

  • Before Lab session starts you will need

  • Pull the Cat Out Of The Bags.

  • Begin your Dissection of the Hide by making five
    cuts
  • Make similar cuts as the vertical cut but in
    these 5 locations
  • Right Front Anterior Leg and around Wrist
  • Left Front Anterior Leg and around Wrist
  • Right Back Anterior Leg and around Ankle
  • Left Back Anterior Leg and around Ankle
  • Around the Neck
  • Cat Back In The Bag
  • Place the metal tray with Cat on the tray in the
    Cut Bag (Wet Bag). Slide the metal tray out and
    leave the Cat In The bag (Wet Bag).
  • Secure the (Wet Bag) with a rubber band
  • Place the second bag (Dry Bag) over the (Wet Bag)
    and secure with a rubber band.
  • Place the bagged Cat back in the container with
    LID closed.

  • Before Lab session starts you will need

  • Cat Out Of The Bag
  • Pull the Cat Out Of The Bags.
  • Pour any Cat Juice down the drain.
  • Place Cat on tray Dorsal side down
  • Begin your Dissection by removing the Hide
  • Remove the Hide Superior to Inferior
  • Start with Front legs. Have your partner pull on
    the Hide while you gently cut through the Loose
    Tissue and Fat. The More Loose Tissue and Fat
    you can get off with the hide the easier the
    dissection will be later.
  • Be careful not to cut through muscle (it will
    look like cooked chicken).
  • Continue removing the hide down the body. Their
    may be times that the fat will look more reddish
    (especially in the groin area.
  • STOP at the tail - leave the hide attached at the
    tail.
  • Free the Back legs from the hide.
  • Cat Back In The Bag
  • Place the metal tray with Cat on the tray in the
    Cut Bag (Wet Bag). Slide the metal tray out and
    leave the Cat In The bag (Wet Bag).
  • Secure the (Wet Bag) with a rubber band
  • Place the second bag (Dry Bag) over the (Wet Bag)
    and secure with a rubber band.
  • Place the bagged Cat back in the container with
    LID closed.
  • Clean Up Procedure

    intact.

    (near tail) and upper lower Leg. Try to use
    the sides that are most intact.

  • Today, make a vertical cut through the abdominal
    wall. Starting at the Xiphoid Process of the
    Sternum (below ribs) continue cut down to the
    lower abdomen (genital region). Make lateral
    cuts following the rib cage to the sides of each
    cat. Make similar cuts down at the bottom of
    vertical cut (in the lower abdomen).

  • Today, using a scalpel or scissors cut through
    the ribs just beside the sternum on both sides.
    Continue the cut at the top so that you cut the
    Sternum completely out of the cat.

    tissue attaching the heart dorsally.

  • Today, use the time to finish anything that needs
    to be checked off. If you have finished with the
    Heart, look for these things below
  • Kidneys look behind the intestines, usually
    covered in fat
  • Trachea
  • Esophagus
  • If you want you can try to find these below
  • Reproductive system of Male or Female, Page 42 or
    43
  • Or
  • Brain Use the Scalpel to remove the ears and
    all muscle from the head down the level of the
    eyes. Also remove the neck muscles. Try to
    clean the bones of all muscle. Using the saw,
    try to make a hole in the skull. Once you make a
    hole in the skull try to cleanly break pieces of
    the skull away to expose the brain.

  • You can put your cat away and clean up, plus help
    other groups finish!
