  • Tobacco use has dropped in adults over 40 since
    1965
  • 75 of adults dont use tobacco at all
  • WHO ARE THEY GOING TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF?

Tobacco Addiction
  • Despite high personal costs and health risks,
    some people continue to smoke or chew tobacco.
  • Addiction physical or psychological need for a
    drug
  • Physical Dependence type of addiction in which
    the body itself feels a direct need for a drug
  • Temperature, heart rate, digestion, etc.
  • Psychological Dependence addiction in which the
    mind sends the body a message that it needs more
    of a drug
  • Driving to work, after they finish a meal, etc.
  • Withdrawal the physical and psychological
    symptoms that occur when someone stops using an
    addictive substance
  • Headaches, fatigue, shakiness, nervousness,
    anxiety, sad, etc.
  • According to the Centers for Disease Control and
    PreventionNicotine Addiction is the most common
    form of addiction in the U.S.

  • In 2000, 70 of teen smokers said that they
    regretted having started
  • Approximately 44 million American adults are now
    former smokers

    or who have quit has consistently been on the
    rise

Secondhand smoke
  • Secondhand smoke air that has been contaminated
    by tobacco smoke
  • Mainstream Smoke smoke that a smoker inhales and
    then exhales
  • Sidestream Smoke smoke given off by the burning
    end of a cigarette, cigar, or pipe
  • Sidestream smoke contains twice as much tar and
    nicotine as mainstream smoke
  • Can lead to
  • Respiratory illnesses pneumonia and bronchitis
  • Lung disease, heart disease, and cancer in
    nonsmokers

    maintain a healthy weight
  • Actually, it decreases a persons ability perform
    aerobic exercise
  • Image some think it makes them look Grown Up
  • Actually, it makes you look dumb to know
    everything about how unhealthy it is and still do
    it

  • Actually, then you become addicted and dependent
    on an expensive, unhealthy habit

    order to fit in

  • Advertising (86 of kids that smoke prefer one
    of the 3 most heavily advertised brands)

How Not to Start
  • 90 of Adult smokers started before age 21
  • Good Chance if you dont until youre older, than
    you wont do it
  • Choose friends that dont smoke
  • Avoid situations where tobacco products may be
    used
  • Use Refusal Skills

  • Gradually decreasing the amount of tobacco used
    over time
  • Cold Turkey quitting all at once (chance of
    withdrawal symptoms)
  • Nicotine Patch medication that allows tobacco
    users to give up tobacco right away while
    gradually cutting down on nicotine
