Title: Council on Research and Creativity
1Council on Research and Creativity
- Grant Writing Workshop
- August 2004
2Mission of the CRC
- Faculty members advise VP for Research on use of
resources for the stimulation of research and
other forms of creative activity - Members offer counsel to faculty across the
campus - Members administer funding programs
3Purposes of Funding Programs
- Completion of advanced projects
- Initiation of new projects
- Formation of project teams
- Facilitation of meetings with external funding
program officers - Provision of seed money making possible
successful external funding applications - Generation of overhead on grants, making possible
continued support of research and creative
activity at Florida State University
4Indirect cost or grant overhead?
- The direct cost of project is funded.
- You get all of what you asked for if you received
the full award from the funding agency. - Or, you receive all of the direct the agency
chose to award you. - You lose nothing.
- Indirect cost is an add-on not affecting the
amount of your direct. - State grants pay 5 indirect to FSU.
- Federal grants pay FSU up to 46.
- Indirect supports research at FSU.
- Everyone gains.
5- No indirect cost coming in no CRC funding
programs, nor certain other kinds of support.
6Applying for grants including indirect cost is a
priority for all faculty.
- But not all grant opportunities include overhead.
7Grants without indirect cost are also important.
- External funding for projects makes possible
their completion - Internal funding can be directed to other
projects that can eventually become eligible for
external support - External support validates the merit of a project
and the professional standing of the P.I.
8Faculty at Research I Universities apply for
external funding.
- The CRC helps FSU faculty to do so successfully
with eight programs.
