Inactivity A National Concern
  • 950,000 deaths each year are due to lack of
    physical activity. That is one death every 33
    seconds.
  • At age 10, 1 in 6 children are showing signs of
    heart disease.
  • Lack of physical activity is attributed to rising
    childhood obesity.
  • Students watch 27 hours of television, and
    participate in 13 hours of physical activity
    each week.

Obesity and Children
  • In the US, 27 of 10 year olds are overweight
    or obese.
  • The US is ranked third behind Malta (33) and
    Italy (29) for having the most overweight or
    obese 10 year olds.
  • 22 million of the worlds children are
    overweight or obese.
  • One in five Hispanic and African-American
    children are overweight or obese.

PLAY Program Implementation

Step 1 One Week
  • Teacher explains PLAY and the importance of
    physical activity
  • Teacher leads 10-15 minute activity break and
    prompts children to move at their own pace

Step 2 Three Weeks
  • Teacher leads 10-15 minute activity breaks
    playing simple games
  • PLAY Specialist will visit each classroom for one
    activity break

Step 3 Eight Weeks
  • Students will record their daily activity on
    physical activity log sheets
  • PLAY Specialist will visit
  • To introduce activity logs
  • To present on nutrition
  • To give out student certificates
  • For a wrap up meeting with teachers
