  • North Tyneside Current Position-
  • CYPL team consists of x2 PDMs, Competition
    Manager, AST Dance, School Improvement Officer
    (PE Out of Hours Learning),Senior School
    Improvement Officer (Curriculum Development
    Support) - based in one location linked closely
    to Sport Development and x2 Sport Colleges.
  • 93 of pupils receive 2 hours of high quality PE
    within and beyond the curriculum (PESSCL 07-08).
  • CYPL and Cultural Services were in the top
    quartile for their promotion of sport, recreation
    and exercise for children and young people and
    received the most positive rating from all
    questions (2008 Audit Commissions School Survey).
  • 65 of NT young people want more PE sport
    (Youth Matters survey).

What the team set out to do-
  • All young people to have 2 hours high quality
    curriculum PE per week
  • Focus on the high quality element get this
    right before move on to 3 agenda
  • Build on a solid foundation, so high quality
    becomes normal practice and pupils want more and
    move into OSHL.
  • Work with schools to put systems in place, but
    not make judgements for them, down to school and
    OFSTED
  • Systematic approach on 2 hours as a starting
    point, whilst preparing for 3 agenda
  • Prepare workforce for 3 agenda and make sure
    people understand their responsibility to 5 hour
    offer.
  • Ensure systems and procedures are in place to
    move to 3 agenda.
  • Essential to work strategically with key partners
    to support and embed the 5 hour offer
  • Introduce a 5 hour offer question with PESSCL
    though results disappointing

    BHF (now use partnership funding and re-focus
    target groups)
  • School staff delivering (inc TAs HLTAs,
    lunchtime supervisors) as they are trained and
    confident
  • NT community sports coaches - PPA - OSHL clubs
    (teacher present to mentor)
  • Local sports club coaches taster sessions - OSHL
    club (teacher present)
  • NGB taster sessions OSHL club
  • External companies deliver OSHL leads to
    festivals e.g. cheerleading, kickboxing
  • Sportsleaders - officiate help at festivals -

  • Consult with the pupils, make curriculum PE of
    high quality and they will want to do more. Use
    the same high quality deliverers for the
    curriculum as OSHL and it becomes the norm.

  • NT leisure centres - 30 million investment in
    facilities host community clubs, holiday
