What are the differences between elementary and
high school classes?
  • You can have four different classes with four
    different teachers, in four different classrooms
    and with four different groups of students.
  • Some classes can be very large with up to 30
    students in it.
  • You can fail a specific course. For example, if
    you fail Math 8 you have to repeat Math 8 to go
    on to Math 9.

What are semesters?
  • The school year is divided into halves called
    semesters.
  • You have half your classes in the first semester
    and half in the second.
  • The semesters are divided into halves called
    terms or quarters. There are four terms in the
    school year.

What kind of courses do I get to take?
  • Required courses all grade 8s must take these
    courses.
  • Elective courses you have a choice as to which
    courses you take.

What do I do to pass?
  • Attend all classes on time. If you are away for
    any reason you are responsible for making up
    missed work.
  • Complete all your homework to the best of your
    ability and hand it in.
  • Complete all tests to the best of your ability.
    If you miss one you will have to make it up.
  • Use your agenda to write down assignments and
    test dates. Keep your binders organized.
  • If you are struggling, ask for help from your
    teachers, parents or counsellors.

Required Courses

English
  • All students must take and pass English 8
  • You must pass English 8 before you can take
    English 9. If not, you must retake English 8.
  • Topics include listening, speaking, reading,
    writing, language study and contemporary
    literature.

Mathematics
  • All students must take and pass Math 8.
  • You must pass Math 8 to do Math 9.
  • Topics include rational numbers, ratio and
    percent, equation solving, 2D 3D shapes and
    graphing.

Physical Education
  • All students must take and pass PE 8.
  • You must have passed PE 8 to take PE 9.
  • Activities include team sports such as soccer,
    softball, basketball, volleyball, touch football,
    rugby and wrestling as well as individual sports
    such as climbing, showshoeing, snowboarding and
    other outdoor activies.

Excel Golf Program
  • This program is for students who are already
    accomplished golfers and play regularly on a
    course.
  • Students get credit for PE and Strength
    Conditioning.

Science
  • All students must take and pass Science 8.
  • French Immersion students must take and pass
    Sciences Naturelles 8.

Social Studies
  • All students must take and pass Social Studies 8.
  • French Immersion students must take and pass
    Sciences Humaines 8.
  • Topics include geography, history comparison of
    civilizations of Europe and Asia from 200AD to
    1500AD
  • There is a medieval feast!

HECTEC 08
  • All students take HECTEC 08.
  • You will rotate through the following courses
  • Woodwork
  • Technology
  • Foods Nutrition
  • Clothing Textiles

1st Elective Choice
  • All students must select either Art/Drama 08 or
    Band 08
  • Choir 8 is also an extra choice. It occurs
    after-school one day a week.

Art/Drama
  • Art drawing, painting, ceramics, crafts,
    printmaking
  • Drama puppet creation and airbands.

Music
  • Band 8
  • Choir 8

2nd Elective Choice
  • All students must select a language.

Languages
  • All non-immersion students must take French 8 as
    their beginning language.
  • Francais Langue 8 required for French Immersion
    Students

Ordering Your Choices
  • Since time-tabling is a complex process,
    sometimes you may not get the courses you want.

For Example
  • If you choose Art/Drama and it is full, you will
    be put into Band and vice-versa.

Your Choices Are Important!
  • The timetable is based on how many students sign
    up for classes.
  • If you dont sign up for a course and there are
    too few students who do, the course will not be
    offered in the next year.

Can I Change My Classes?
  • Due to the structure of the timetable, its not
    recommended that Grade 8 students attempt to
    change their schedule.
  • Any changing of classes is based on whether there
    is room in the course and the nature of the
    change.
  • Any changes will have to be okayed by you parents.

What Happens If I Fail A Class?
  • If you fail a required class, and you havent
    been recommended by your teachers and counsellors
    for summer school or Flex-Ed, you will
    automatically be scheduled to repeat the class.

Can I Have A Spare/Study Block?
  • No!
  • Grade 8 students are required to have a full
    timetable of 32 credits (8 classes)

    website at www.sd22.bc.ca/seaton.
  • Click on and then download the appropriate
    grade course registration form.
