About CHAIN
- International not for profit organization
registered as a charity and company in the United
kingdom and Uganda. It promotes the empowerment
of people living with HIV/AIDS. - Established in 1998.
- CHAINs work is undertaken in Africa and in the
Great Lakes region in particular. (Uganda, Kenya,
Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania Democratic republic
of Congo.

- People living with HIV/AIDS having choices and
opportunities to make informed decisions about
their health, social and economic circumstances.
Well-informed communities are better able to
support people living with HIV and to respond
effectively to the challenges of the HIV
pandemic.

healthcare is delivered in an appropriate way so

- Patient Involvement patients should have the
opportunity to be involved in healthcare at their
level of choice. - Gone are the days in Africa when patients left
every thing to their doctors. We must work
towards creating an expert patient who is
empowered and hence able to take part in
decisions that affect his or her health. - Patients must feel that they are part of the
programme design, implementation and evaluation. -

- Respect for the individual patient, their wants,
preferences, values, needs and rights by - CHAIN works in partnership with other patients
organisations like Uganda National Health
Consumer/user s Organisation (UNHCO), Coalition
for access to essential medicines, among others
to raise awareness on healthcare issues through
workshops, discussions - CHAIN resource centre gives patients an
opportunity to meet counselors,and fellow
patients for support - We use a Rights based approach in all our
programmes. - Outcome Awareness in health issues raised
- Challenge Activities still limited by resources

- Access to the health care service
- Advocate and lobby for access to healthcare
services by engaging government and other key
stakeholders. - CHAIN links patients to appropriate healthcare
services and doctors through its scientific
committee and partners. - Counseling sessions are offered at the resource
centre.

- Information that is accurate, relevant and
comprehensive - CHAIN provides up to date information on
HIV/AIDS,TB and malaria prevention,care and
treatment. - Production of easy to read treatment guides
such as the Great Lakes positive handbook A
guide to anti-retroviral therapy, leaflets,
posters and other tailor made information,
Education and Communication (IEC) materials. - Information is disseminated through CHAIN
resource center and treatment literacy workshops
organised at the community, national and regional
level. - Outcome people are informed and are responsible
for their healthcare. - Challenge limited resources to produce adequate
material and also translate it into different
local languages for wider circulation and use

- Empowerment patients should be empowered so
that they are able to make informed decisions
about their healthcare and should also be
encouraged to take leadership roles. - CHAIN builds capacity of patients networks
,healthcare proffessionals and community based
organisations through trainings/workshops and
Bi-annual conferences in the GL region in
HIVAids prevention,treatment and care,
leadership, advocacy ,IT, project management and
planning, providing life skills and income
generating activities (IGAs)

Conclusion
- Need for health literacy,involvement and
empowerment of patients - Patients need to be responsible for their health
care - Health professionals and patients should work in
partnership - All stakeholders in healthcare should be
involved so as to achieve patient-centred
healthcare
