- A magnitude 6.3 earthquake flattened over
110,000 homes and buildings in central Indonesia
at 554 am Saturday morning - The earthquake struck near the ancient city of
Yogyakarta, 250 miles east of the capital,
Jakarta.
- More than 5,826 people were killed, thousands
injured, and 200,000 left homeless. - 80 of the Bantul District of Yogyakarta was
devastated.

- Japans Meteorological Agency said in their
announcement of the quake that there was no
danger of a tsunami.
- Even so, in the chaos that followed the quake,
rumors of an impending tsunami sent thousands of
people on Java fleeing in cars and motorbikes to
higher ground.
