Title: LIVING BY FAITH

1
LIVING BY FAITH
  • HEBREWS 11

2
UNDERSTANDING FAITH 1-6
  • Faith is being sure of what we hope for and
certain of what we do not see. That is what the
    ancients were commended for.
  • By faith we believe in Gods creation by His
command. Visible things were made from what is
    invisible.
  • Abel offered a better sacrifice than Cain, by
faith. God commended his righteousness. Being
    dead he still speaks.

3
Understanding --
  • By faith Enoch was taken from this life without
    seeing death. He pleased God.
  • Without faith it is impossible to please God.
  • He who comes to God must believe
  • That He is
  • That He is the rewarder of those who earnestly
    seek Him.

4
Noah and Abraham 7-19
  • Noah when warned of things not seen, moved with
holy fear and built an ark to save his family. He
    condemned the world.
  • Abraham, when called to go to a place he would
later inherit, obeyed and went even though he
didnt know where he was going.
  • By faith he made his home in the promised land.
  • Like a stranger he lived in tents, as did Isaac
and Jacob, heirs of the same promise.

5
Abraham
  • He was looking forward to the city with
foundations, whose architect and builder is God.
  • By faith he and Sarah had a son, even when both
    were past the age.
  • From his came descendants as numerous as the
stars and countless as sand on the seashore.

6
Abraham
  • All these lived by faith until death.
  • They didnt receive the things promised.
  • They only saw them from a distance.
  • They admitted they were strangers and aliens on
    earth.
  • They were looking for a country of their own. A
    better country, a heavenly one.
  • Therefore God isnt ashamed to be their God, for
    He prepared them a city.

7
Abraham
  • By faith Abraham when tested offered Isaac as a
sacrifice. He was ready to sacrifice him even
though he was the promised son.
  • Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead.
Figuratively he did bring him back from death.

8
Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and Moses 20-31
  • By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau with regard
    to the future.
  • By faith Jacob, when dying blessed each of
Josephs sons and worshiped leaning on his staff.
  • By faith Joseph, at death spoke of his bones and
    gave instructions.
  • By faith Moses parents hid him because they saw
    he was no ordinary child.

9
Moses
  • By faith Moses refused to be called the son of
    Pharaohs daughter, choosing mistreatment along
with his people rather than enjoy the pleasures
of sin for a short time.
  • He regarded disgrace for Christ greater value
than the treasures of Egypt, because he was
    looking ahead for his reward.
  • By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the kings
anger, He persevered because he saw him who is
    invisible.

10
Moses
  • By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling
of blood, so destroyer wouldnt touch firstborn
    of Israel.
  • By faith the people passed through the Red Sea on
dry land, but wall of water fell on Egyptians.
  • By faith the walls of Jericho fell after people
    marched 7 days.
  • By faith Rahab welcomed the spies.

11
Other men of faith 32-40
  • No time to talk of Gideon, Barak, Samson,
Jephthah, David, Samuel and the prophets.
  • Who through faith conquered kingdoms,
administered justice, gained what was promised,
who shut the mouths of lions, quenched the fury
of the flames, escaped the sword whose weakness
was turned to strength, who became strong in
    battle and routed the enemies.

12
Others
  • Women received back their dead, alive.
  • Others were tortured, and refused release, to
    gain a better resurrection.
  • Some faced jeers and flogging while still others
were chained and put in prison. They were
stoned, sawed in two, put to death by sword. The
went about in sheepskins and goatskins destitute,
    persecuted and mistreated.

13
Others
  • The world was not worthy of them.
  • They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in
caves and holes in the ground.
  • These were all commended for their faith, yet
none of them received what had been promised. God
had planned something better for us so that only
together with us would they be made perfect.
