2007 shows a great increase in the number of
foreign people from Europe because of Romania
entrance into the UE.
4Foreign minors in Torino The percentage of
foreign minors is 17,3 of the total numbers
of minors in Torino The 22,051 young immigrates
that live in Torino have the same problems that
young Italians have to face the road towards
adulthood. But we can add language difficulties,
the disorientation, cultural and social
differences from the countries they came from
and the city that welcomes them.

nationalities that we have in Torino
5Porta Palazzo, the first approach for the newly
arrived in Torino
Porta Palazzo has always been the melting pot of
Turin, welcoming all new comers. From just after
the second world war with internal immigration
from the south and today immigrants mostly from
non-European countries. The expansion of the
market (the largest in Europe) a vibrant part of
the city with people from every country of the
world.
6The Porta Palazzo Orchestra is a musical space
where different cultures can meet with their
experiences, their religions, their histories of
immigration from all over the world.
7 San Salvario the multiethnic heart of the city
San Salvario is one of the biggest residential
districts in Turin. The northern half of the
district still shows sign of degradation due to
the unusual social demographic, ethnic and
religious conditions of the people.
Yet, walking along its streets it is like
listening the multiethnic heart of the city, as
there are so many different communities
Italians, Romanians, people from South Africa,
Somalia, Nigeria.
8In San Salvario Muslims live side by side with
Jews and Waldenses.
There are approximately 1.100 Jews in Turin. The
Jews community is very active politically,
culturally, and socially. The heart of the
community is at the synagogue in P.Levi Square
In Turin there is a Waldesian community that is
based in the Temple in Corso Vittorio Emanuele 23
built in 1853
There are about 15.000 Muslims living in the city
area
9Every 2 years , in October, in Torino, there is
the biennial international meeting of the Terra
Madre Network. Terra Madre is an explosion of
colors, music and dancing. It brings together
food communities, cooks, academics and youth
delegates for four days to work towards
increasing small-scale, traditional, and
sustainable food production.
The Sounds of Terra Madre is one of the great
innovations of the 2008 edition, presenting a
journey of sound education, offering the ear
something different from the often-soulless
commercial music.
10ALMA MATER an intercultural centre for women
Alma Mater was founded in 1993, thanks to funding
from the city of Torino.
In this Centre immigrants women can met up,
exchange experiences and socialize with Italian
women. They can also get on with working
activities. Alma mater is a beautiful
construction built in the XIX century, situated
in Barriera di Milano a quarter the North of
Turin, where there is a great concentration of
immigrants. It conveys the idea of beautiful
and dignity that is rarely found in buildings
occupied by the immigrant community.

11 Identity and Differences A Festival of
intercultural experiences
The Festival Identity and Differences has taken
place in Torino for the last 12 years. It
started with the idea of showing intercultural
experiences of our city to valorise different
artistic and cultural expressions, literature,
theatre, dance and food. This festival
demonstrates how cohabitation between different
cultures can result in good integration.

city
