Title: The Passing of Traits

1
The Passing of Traits
2
Traits
  • Traits are passed from parent to offspring during
    reproduction.
  • Traits are determined by the combination of DNA
that is found in the nuclei of our cells.
  • Animals, like you, get their DNA from each parent.

3
Who do you look most like?
  • The traits you have come from your biological
    parents.
  • Its in your genes.
  • These are not the types of Jeans you wear.

4
What are Genes?
  • Genes are sections of DNA that tell the cells of
your body what types of protein to make.
  • example If you have brown hair, the cells in
your hair follicles are told by the DNA to make a
brown color to put into that piece of hair. If
you have blonde hair, your DNA does not tell the
cells to make the pigment and so it is left out
    of your hair

5
Two types of Genes
  • Dominant
  • If a dominant trait is present, it will show up.
  • Example Brown eyes are dominant
  • Recessive
  • A recessive trait will only show up if there is
    not Dominant gene present.
  • Example Blue eyes are recessive

6
So what does that mean?
  • If mom gives the child a gene for brown eyes and
dad gives the child a gene for blue eyes, what
color eyes will the child have?
  • Brown eyes

7
