• 1. The Romans are credited with developing the
  first mortar/concrete hence inventing paved
  roads.

• 3. Roman roads were expanded during the Empire
  period beginning with Augustus. During his reign
  milestones were erected every 1000 paces. The
  imperial milestone was a golden one placed by
  Augustus himself in Rome in the Forum Romanum.
