Creating Webpages
  • The creation of a website is really pretty
simple if you can work a computer, you can
    author a website.
  • Were going to review the basic steps to website
creation and then were going to review how to
go about it here at USM
  • Lets go!!!

3
Step 1
  • Design Stage - you need to decide the basics
  • Why are you doing this? (give information, get
    information, etc.)
  • Who is your audience (current students, incoming
    students, parents, etc.)?
  • What information do you want to provide?
  • How do you want the site to flow?
  • You may need to review some similar websites to
get an idea as to where to start
  • Write down your thoughts before you move on

4
Step 2
  • You will need web authoring software (such as
FrontPage or DreamWeaver) on your computer to
create the website some are called HTML
    Editors
  • Note The USM Logic Shop sells MS FrontPage for
    49 see usm.maine.edu/computing/sales/
  • Most of these programs are designed to be very
easy to use and will feel much like your word
    processing program
  • Once you have this software, you can start
    writing your page(s).

5
Step 2, continued
  • Depending on what features and options you want
to use, it should be very easy to create a basic
    page.
  • You can do many of the things youre used to
doing in your word processor (such as Microsoft
Word or WordPerfect), such as making text bold,
underlined or italicized, importing pictures and
text from other programs, and creating lists.
  • You can also create hyperlinks to link your pages
to other webpages, send email to folks, and
    assorted other things.

6
Step 3
  • Once youve got your page done (or ready to
test), youre now ready to upload it
  • Right now, your website is located only where you
have saved it probably on your hard drive.
  • In order for it to be publicly accessible, it
must be uploaded to a Web Server.

7
Step 3, continued
  • In order to upload or send the files to the USM
web server, you must first get permission from
your supervisor to update/change your areas
    webpage.
  • You can do this by submitting an online form,
    available at
  • usm.maine.edu/computing/resources/webmaster/webma
    ster_form.htm

9
Step 3, continued
  • Once you have permission to update the site (you
will receive an email from Stephen Houser here at
USM when youre all approved), you can start
    uploading and downloading.
  • We use a special program to do this at USM called
WS-FTP its located in your USM Apps group
(go to the start button, then USM Apps
    itll be the bottom program).
  • If you have Windows XP, you will need to click
Start, All Programs and then find the USM
    Apps folder.

11
Step 3, continued
  • The first time you use the program, it will show
you a bunch of Profile Names in the drop down
menu. These are publicly accessible FTP sites
that you will probably never use.
  • To create the profile for USM
  • click on the new button,
  • Type USM or something similar in the profile
    name box
  • The host/name address is www.usm.maine.edu
  • Host type should be UNIX (Standard)
  • For User ID and password, enter your Novell
information (the user id and password you input
when you start up your computer in the morning)

12
Step 3, continued
  • Once you have successfully logged in, you will
see a screen with two lists of files.
  • On your left are the files on your computer (or
    attached, via a network drive)
  • On your right are the files on the web server
that youre connected to. Note that your files
should be in the public.www folder

13
Your computers files are over here
These are the files on the web server
14
  • If you want to upload a file (this means that
you want to send it from your computer to the web
    server)
  • Select the file(s) on your computer that you want
to upload (on the left hand side)
  • Make sure that the web directory (folder) that
you want to put the file(s) into is open on the
    right hand side
  • Click the left to right or upload arrow
  • Well done!

15
Select the file(s) to upload
Make sure the correct directory is open
16
Now, click the left to right or upload button
and youre done!
17
Step 3, continued
  • When using WS-FTP, its important to remember
that the program will automatically over-write
files with the same name, so make sure that
youre uploading the correct files into the
    correct directory every time.

18
Step 4
  • Viewing your webpage!
  • Its time to open your web browser (Internet
Explorer, Netscape, etc.), point it at your
webpage and see what it looks like live
  • If you dont like something, go back to your web
editor, change it, upload it again and come back
    to take a look

19
Summary
  • While the technical aspects of how to use these
programs can seem a little intimidating at first,
you will get used to it rather quickly,
especially if you do it fairly regularly.
  • Let me know if you have questions
