Title: Advancing Alberta Commercialization and Innovation
1Advancing Alberta Commercialization and
Innovation
- Proposal 09-APR-09
- IRAP
- Alberta Ingenuity
- Western Diversification
- Alberta Advanced Education and Technology
2We agree the issues!
- Emerging technologies are Albertas natural
socio-economic change-agents but not always with
intended consequences - The term technology is very broad and too
narrowly defined - Early-stage start-ups are key to
commercialization/innovation but have proven hard
to grow and sustain - Hi-risk small and often isolated,
under-represented, poorly understood and
financed the unregulated domain of angels and
vultures - Disadvantaged under-resourced with fragile,
fragmented and largely urban-centric
technology/professional associations - Public science-research facilities are effective
at discovery but ineffective as drivers of
commercialization. - These issues prompted formation of ABCtech
Diversifying Albertas economy through technology
3We agree the solution(s)!
- Pushing research and technology is not enough.
A - sustained commercialization Pull requires
timely access to - risk-tolerant and affordable
- Management
- Money
- Marketing
- Manpower
- Mentors
- and More
Stage 1. Formation of an independent champion
for developing trust and understanding with
early-stage, start-ups while forging
public-private relationships Stage 2. Developing
local Networks of community enterprise as Centres
of TRUST ! Stage 3. Capitalizing on brand and
financing ABCtech through sponsorships and
services!
