• The first thing you need to know in the event of
  an accident, injury or illness that occurs at the
  workplace is?

• Know your departments policy on responding to an
  accident, incident or illness occurring at work
  
• Know emergency contact numbers, fire, police,
  poison control
  
• Gillis W. Long Center does not have dedicated
  first responders to aid and treat injured
  workers
  
• As a result, the injured person or witness
  needs to make an assessment of the situation

Assessment

• Can the injured treat him/herself?
• Does a co worker need to drive them to the local
  clinic?
  
• Does the witness need to call 911?
• Is immediate care required before ambulatory
  assistance arrives?

• If you are not a medical professional or a
  designated first responder and you assist someone
  who has had an accident then you are a

Good Samaritan

• Includes all of those who voluntarily provide
  assistance in an emergency.
  
• The assistance provided may be something such as
  performing CPR, tying a bandage to stop bleeding,
  or any other care of treatment.

First Aid Tips

• Stay Calm
• Assess the scene to make sure no other hazards
  exist that may cause more harm
  
• Keep victim lying down, head level to the body
  until you know the extent of the injury
  
• Check Airways, breathing, and circulation

First Aid Tips (contd)

• Check for a medical alert emblem or tag
• Keep the victim warm
• Do not attempt to move the seriously injured
• Do not attempt to give water to a unconscious or
  semi-conscious victim
  
• Make the victim as comfortable as possible
• Call for assistance if and when needed

Reporting

• Report all injuries, accidents and incidents to
  your supervisor as soon as possible!

Blood Borne Pathogen

• Blood Borne Pathogens are micro organisms present
  in human blood that can cause disease in humans
  
• These include hepatitis B (HBV) and human
  immunodeficiency virus (HIV) the virus that cause
  AID (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.

Hepatitis B Virus (HBV)

• HBV is a liver disease and can lead to cirrhosis
  and liver cancer.
  
• There are 300,000 new cases of HBV in the U.S.
  every year
  
• There is no cure, but there is a vaccine
  available that can prevent the infection

HBV

• HBV is most often transmitted through breaks in
  the skin or mucous membranes
  
• Usually occurs through needle sticks, human
  bites, or having infectious material (blood, or
  other body fluids) get into existing cuts or
  abrasions

• Symptoms of HBV
• Mild Flu like systems
• Fatigue
• Possible stomach pain
• loss of appetite or even nausea
• As the disease develops jaundice will occur

• After exposure it can take up to 2 to 6 months
  for HBV to develop.
  
• Vaccinations begun immediately after exposure
  may prevent infections

HIV

• Symptoms
• Weakness
• Fever
• Sore throat
• Nausea
• Headaches
• Diarrhea
• other flu like symptoms

HIV

• In most cases HIV leads to the development of
  AIDS
  
• There is no cure for HIV or AIDS
• There is no vaccination to prevent the
  development of AIDS if HIV is contracted

Universal Precautions

• Treat all first aid situations where blood or
  other body fluids are present as situations which
  you might be exposed
  
• Guard yourself against exposure
• Take precautions for all incidents even if the
  victim do not appear to be sick

Universal Precautions

• Wear impermeable gloves
• Wear any necessary personal protective equipment
  (PPE) gowns, gloves, masks, goggles
  
• Perform proper clean-up with chemical germ
  killers
  
• Wash hands immediately after removing gloves or
  other protective equipment
