What is Bullying?
  • Bullying is a pattern of repeated mean behavior
    that is intended to harm physically, emotionally
    or socially and usually has an imbalance of power.

Girls vs. Boys Bullying
  • Girls tend to rely more heavily on
    behind-the-back bullying.
  • Boys tend to rely more heavily on face to face
    bullying.

Understanding the Girls World
  • Girls are typically social beings with their
    identity gained within social groups.
  • Relational Aggression is
  • Aggressive, hurtful behaviors from within social
    relationships or friendship groups
  • Main form of bullying used by girls (Girl
    Bullying)

Help the Student with Bully Behavior by
  • Involve the student in a helping activity
  • Offer the Behavior Change Worksheet
  • Give consequences 3 Rs of Discipline
  • Look for positive leadership roles for the
    student

Help the Target so They Dont Become a Victim of
Bullying by
  • Review the difference between a conflict and
    bullying
  • Utilize the Bully Behavior Reporting Sheet
  • Clarify with the student the IN/OUT Rule
  • Dont rescue the target/victim EMPOWER them.
    Respond by asking the target/victim
  • Do you believe what they said?
  • What can you think or tell yourself about it the
    would help?
  • As the student shares a positive way to think
  • about the situation COMPLIMENT the student with a
    statement such as
  • Sounds like a smart way to think! or Very
    mature of you!

Help the Bystander by
  • Clarifying with the student the IN/OUT Rule.
  • Complimenting the student for having the courage
    and caring to tell.

  • What they could do to help the target
  • And how they can show the target their support

What else can we do to support an effective
schoolwide bullying program?

  • I have come to a frightening conclusion that I
    am the decisive element in the classroomAs a
    teacher, I possess tremendous power to make a
    childs life miserable or joyous. I can be a
    tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration,
    can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all
    situations, it is my response that decides
    whether a crisis will be escalated or
    de-escalaed, and a child humanized or
    de-humanized.
