The Sioux

• The Sioux lived in the region known as the Great
  Plains.
• Horses sacred dogs and Buffalo tatanka were
  significant for survival.
• The Great Sioux Nation was originally made up of
  seven American Indian groups. The Sioux called
  these groups the Seven Council Fires.
• The Dakota made up four of the council fires,
  Nakota, Sioux and Lakota.

The Sioux

• The Sioux believed that everything in the world
  had a spirit, including rocks and trees.
• The most powerful spirit was the Great Spirit or
  Grandfather Spirit.
• The Sun Dance was one of the most important
  ceremonies this dance was believed to bring good
  fortune to their people.
• As white settlers passed through Sioux territory
  they began to settle and the U.S Army began to
  build forts to protect these men.

The Sioux

• The buffalo provided everything they needed
  including meat, clothes and shelter.
• Hunting parties were crucial to the survival and
  the men would ride on horseback to hunt the
  buffalo.
• The Sioux celebrated a hunt with dancing and
  drumming.
• Men were taught to become leaders by showing
  bravery in the battle field.
• Women had special rules and tended gardens and
  children.

• Crazy Horse and Chief Red Cloud began leading
  attacks on the U.S. Army in the early 1800s.
• In 1876 Colonel George Custer and thousands of
  soldiers attacked the Sioux but were defeated by
  the Indian warriors this battle was known as The
  Battle of the Little Bighorn.
• The Sioux could not resist the U.S. Army for
  long. Eventually, leaders surrendered and the
  white men had wiped out most of the buffalo herds
  without the buffalo the Sioux could not survive.

The Cherokee

• The Cherokee lived in the region of the
  Southeast.
• They called themselves Ani Yunwiya the real
  people.
• The Cherokee had town councils who made important
  decisions for the people.
• The council was led by chiefs. Most towns would
  have two chiefs. A red and a white chief. The
  red chief would lead the town in matters of war.
  The white chief would handle law and everyday
  matters.

• Cherokee women chose their own husbands after
  marriage the husband would live with his wifes
  family.
• Women planted, took care of animals, prepared
  food, clothing and some women war women
  traveled with Cherokee war parties.
• Men hunted small and large animals.
• All animals killed were used to the fullest

• The Cherokee also fished in streams and rivers
• The Cherokees most sacred celebration was the
  Green Corn Ceremony it was held in the summer.
  This was the start of a new year and a sacred
  flame was lid to always burn in the middle of the
  town. At the end of the year they put it out
  and lit it again at the beginning of the year.

The Cherokee

• In the 1700s as white settlers arrived disease
  (smallpox) struck and wiped out almost half of
  the Cherokee population.
• Land was taken over by white settlers and by the
  1800s missionaries tried to spread Christianity
  among the Cherokees.
• The Cherokee Phoenix was first published in 1828
  written in half English and half Cherokee it
  would help the Cherokee.

• By the 1830s gold was found and more white
  settlers pushed for land.
• In 1838, the US government forced the Cherokee to
  move known as the Trail of Tears the Cherokee
  walked over 800 miles to Oklahoma many did not
  survive.
