July of 1976, man finally made it to Mars when
the Viking spacecraft landed there. But the news
that captured the covers of Time and Newsweek
wasn't the red planet. It was a 14 year-old
gymnast Nadia Comaneci.
5This is it!
Nadia Comaneci had a last chance to win a
gymnastics gold medal at the Moscow
Olympics-after an angry uproar over here score in
the all-around finals. The 18 year Romanian star
of the 1976 Montreal Olympics with three gold
medals failed to defend her Olympic all-around
title.
6College
After retirement she finished college at the
University of Physical Education and she worked
as a state coach.
7A Perfect 1
Before 1976, no male or female had ever received
a perfect 10 in any Olympic gymnastics event.
Then came Nadia Comaneci . The 14-year-old Romani
an dazzled the judges in Montreal to the point
where they couldn't help but give her a perfect
10. they didn't stop there, for not only did
Nadia receive the first perfect score, she then
proceeded to get six more!
8Working Out
Nadia Comaneci works out 30 minutes a day. Nadia
uses hotel fitness equipment-then she does
stretching for about 5 minutes, then some light
weights. If there isnt any light weights she
does pushups.
9Getting Married
In 1976 Nadia Bart Conner met at Madison Square
Garden, during a pre-Olympic gymnastics
exhibition. In 1989 Nadia escaped under cover, to
seek shelter in the United States. Soon, rumors
spread that she was being held in Florida
against her will Bart contacted her. He offered
moral support through her difficult time in a
strange country, in 1991 she joined him at his
home in Norman. The friendship flourished, Bart
proposed marriage to her in 1994 they were
married in 1996.
10Helping
Nadia Comaneci initiated three years ago in the
St. Spiridon Vechi Church yard.
The building that will be a social-medical
institution dedicated to the orphan and poor
children and that will be named after the former
champion, will be ready in 2007.
11Olympic torch glides through New York
New York-Gold medal gymnast Nadia Comaneci
carried the Olympic torch along the last leg of a
34-mile citywide journey, arriving in Times
Square to the cheers of thousands of spectators.
Nadia glided across the square suspended from a
cable was lowered onto a platform where she lit
the flame.
12Its a boy!
Dylan Paul was a baby both parents waited for a
long while to have. The couple married ten years
ago. With Nadia turning 45, Bart 49, they were
one step away from artificial insemination or
adopting a baby, when the miracle happened,
Nadia got pregnant for the first time.
