Butterflies

The Butterfly
There was an ugly caterpillar,That would do not
a thing but eat,He thought he was quite
handsome,Then he saw his defeat.
He met a beautiful butterfly,With wings that
could expand,"I can be like that!", he
shouted,And ate the leaf in his hand.
He tried his best,He looked real tough,"No,"
he sighed,This will never be enough.
3
He felt tired one day,So he took a nap,Crawled
into his pupa,And shut that little cap.
When he woke up,Everything was different,The
sun was shining bright outside,And the air
smelled of mint.
He felt something on his back,It was bright
and dark blue,He had become a butterfly,His
dream had come true!Author Unknown.

What Is a Butterfly?
  • Beautiful, flying insects
  • Large scaly wings
  • Six legs
  • Three main body parts
  • A pair of antennae, compound eyes, and
    exoskeleton

5
Parts of a Butterfly

A butterfly has three main parts the head,
the thorax, and the abdomen.

6
  • THE HEAD
  • This is where the butterfly takes in its food
and feels the environment using its senses.
  • Butterflies have no jaws and have to sip their
    liquid food through their proboscis.
  • Butterflies also have two compound eyes, which
focuses light and carries information to the
    brain.
  • Their antenna are used for the sense of smell.
Butterflies also use antenna to balance while
    flying.

7
  • THE THORAX
  • The thorax is made up of the muscles that make
    the legs and wings move.
  • The butterflys thorax has six segmented legs

  • The two front legs are very short and are used
    to clean the antenna.
  • The back legs are used to grab food.
  • The wings are attached to the thorax.

8
  • THE ABDOMEN
  • The abdomen is divided into ten segments, but
you can only see about seven to eight sections.
  • The butterflys abdomen contains
  • Heart
  • Reproductive organs
  • Spiracles
  • Digestive system

9
Life Cycle of a Butterfly
10
The Four Stages of the Life Cycle
  • Egg - A butterfly starts its life as an egg.
  • Larva - The larva (caterpillar) hatches from an
egg and eats leaves or flowers almost constantly.
The caterpillar molts (loses its old skin) many
    times as it grows.
  • Pupa - It turns into a pupa (chrysalis) this is
    a resting stage.
  • Adult - A beautiful, flying adult emerges. There
is no growth during this stage. This adult will
    continue the cycle and reproduce.

11
We sing the song to the tune of Hush Little
Baby, Dont Say a Word. A mama butterfly lays
all her eggs, Out pops a caterpillar, crawling on
its legs. The caterpillar first is rather thin
, But then it eats till it bursts through its ski
n. After growing nice and big, The caterpillar
climbs on a leaf or twig. It makes a shell whe
re it hangs inside. The shell then cracks, and th
e parts divide. Inside the shell, a change was
going on, The form of the caterpillar now is gone
. When the shell opens, what comes out? A beau
tiful butterfly fluttering about!

  • Since you were born, you have changed drastically
from a little baby to a young boy or girl.
  • You went from having your parents dress you and
feed you to being able to do it on your own.
  • You no longer need help to do simple things like
get ready for school, eat breakfast, and take a
    shower.
  • Just like a caterpillar changes into a butterfly,
you will change from a baby to a child and then
    to an adult.
  • As you grow up, there will be many changes that
    take place in your life.

15
Now its YOUR turn!
Now that we have discussed how a butterfly
changes and how you go through similar changes,
use the butterfly cutout to make a list of
changes that have occurred in your life since you
were born.
16

  • Which is not one of the three parts of a
    butterfly?
