Title: Use of eExamples and Illumniation

1
Use of e-Examples and Illumniation
  • Preview
  • What are e-examples and illuminations?
  • Group work followed with summary of all groups
  • Questions to answer-
  • How do these activities/problems enable us to
    distinguish between procedural and conceptual
    learning?
  • Define what is procedural and conceptual
    learning?
  • Can we categorize the problems worked on today in
    these groups?

2
e-Examples and Illuminations
  • e-Examples are interactive problems that
    illustrate, demonstrate and support the
    principles and standards.
  • The Illuminations site is designed to
"illuminate" the NCTM Principles and Standards
for School Mathematics. The site contains a
growing array of Internet resources that can be
used to improve the teaching and learning of
mathematics. This site is part of the Marcopolo
    project, funded by MCI Worldcom.

3
Group Work
  • We will now form groups and each group has 4
    tasks.
  • These tasks will look at activities in e-Examples
    and Illuminations.
  • For some groups the activities in e-Examples are
the same as the Illumination activities so that
you can compare them with each other.
  • Some of you will have different activities in the
two sites to get an idea of what other things are
    out there.

Conclusions
  • -Theres almost infinite amount of material
    available at these sites.
  • -We thought that for some of the activities hands
on experience may have been more beneficial and
for others the computer interactivity greatly
enhances the learning process (conceptual and
    procedural parts).
