  • List everything that you notice about this

  • What can you say about the mood and tone of this
    piece?

7
Discovering the GeneralityIn your study of the
two pictures, you might have noticed the
following
  • Exaggerations, such as the mouth on Munchs
    screaming figure
  • Intense colors and use of symbolism, such as the
red in Munch painting, or the blue in Van Goghs
    sky
  • Use of swirls that blend to create a mood, such
as anger in Munchs piece, or peacefulness in Van
    Goghs piece
  • Minimal depth perception for example, the sky
and river in Munchs piece blend into one and
  • Representations of the artists feelings rather
    than representations of reality itself.
  • You may have noticed other features, and that is
    just fine!

8
The Generality
  • Thus, we can say that Expressionism is
    characterized by
  • Exaggerated imagery and distorted objects to
    create an emotional effect
  • Use of swirls and symbolic objects to create an
    emotional effect
  • Representations of how the painter feels about a
subject rather than what the subject actually
    looks like and
  • A flattening of planes.
