Title: CLASSIFIED: SCIENCE FICTION
1CLASSIFIED SCIENCE FICTION
By Gordon Chan
2Are there any new themes or classifications for
Science Fiction?
3All Science Fiction can be placed into Patricia
Warricks 4 themes. They are
4Promethean theme
5In the Promethean theme, man pushes the limits of
technology to where they have never been pushed
before.
6Movies such as Artificial Intelligence are an
example of this theme.
7Ambiguity of Technology
8- Technology can been seen in terms of being
- Good- remarkable breakthrough
- Bad- causing destruction
9An example of this is the Terminator series.
10Irresponsibility of Science
11New technology or artificial life forms are
released into society with very little foresight.
12Blade Runner is an example of this theme.
13Shifting Role of Master and Servant.
14The technology that was created to serve mankind
now takes over.
15The Matrix is an example of this theme.
16I believe that all science fiction, past present
and future, will contain elements of Warricks 4
themes.
17The very nature of Science Fiction dictates that
life is either enhanced or disrupted because of
technology. The variations of how life will
changed can be classified into Warricks themes.
18Thus, I believe that there are no new themes to
Science Fiction.
