3On February 28, 1803, President Thomas Jefferson
won approval from Congress for a visionary
project, an endeavor that would become one of
Americas greatest stories of adventure.
Twenty-five hundred dollars were appropriated
to fund a small expeditionary group, whose
mission was to explore the uncharted West.
Jefferson called the group the Corps of
Discovery. It would be led by Jeffersons
secretary, Meriwether Lewis, and Lewis friend,
William Clark. Over the next four years, the
Corps of Discovery would travel thousands of
miles, experiencing lands, rivers and peoples
that no Americans ever had before.

15Moving On
- In April of 1805, as the ice was breaking up on
the rivers, the expedition left Fort Mandan. The
Corps traveled until they reached the great falls
of the Missouri River. Here they were happily
greeted by the Shoshone Tribe led by Sacajaweas
brother.

17- Using horses given to them by the Shoshone Tribe,
the group continues on to the Rocky Mountains.
Lewis and Clark meet the Nez Perce, who promise
to keep their horses over the winter. They then
begin their decent of the western slope of the
mountains.
18- Once down the Rockies, the group was forced to
make new boat and followed the Columbia River to
the Pacific Ocean. They spend the winter of
1805-1806 near the shore at Fort Clatsop, which
they had built.

- On the return journey, the group spilt up to make
sure they had not missed an important waterway.
They arrived back in St. Louis on September 23,
1806. Many had believed that the explorers were
