Some Interesting Issues related to Global
Reporting of MDG Progress

• 1. Regional variations
• Sub-Sahara region Low economic growth, high
  poverty, hunger and other MDGs
  
• Asia region high economic growth, poverty
  reduction goal on track but hunger and some other
  MDGs (non-income poverty) are not on track
  particularly, in South Asia region. Absolute
  poor people are still very high, over 700 mil.
• 2. Global Reporting Unable to Capture
  Asia-Pacific MDG Progress
  
• Poverty and other MDGs of LDCs of Eastern Asia
  and South Asia are not on track

Rationale for Regional Assessment of MDG
Achievements

• Provides regional perspective and basis for
  further action.
  
• Conveys local and regional concerns at the global
  level.
  
• Assists countries in the region to cooperate
  learn from each other.
  
• Facilitates lessons for people outside the region
  to learn about the Asian-Pacific Story or
  Asian Miracle
  
• reducing mass poverty sustaining economic
  growth social change.
  
• As part of the United Nations MDG campaign for
  the region, initiates dialogue and advocacy to
  advance MDG policy prescriptions.
  
• The regional achievement of MDG assessment will
  be released prior to 2005 MDG5 event to the

  needs of the region

  data from available secondary sources along the
  following sub-grouping to cover all 54 ESCAP
  region countries

• MDG Assessment Analysis
• (a) A systematic in-depth analysis in terms of
  their progress towards achieving MDGs will be
  carried out for three groups of countries
  
• 1. Countries largely on track to meet poverty
  target by 2015 and to achieving many of the
  social targets of the Goals (MDG)
  
• 2. Countries making good progress towards
  poverty target but lagging behind on some
  individual goals, such as achieving universal
  primary education (Some South Asian countries)
  and
• 3. Countries which are far from making adequate
  progress on most of the goals. (LDCs, PICs and
  some LLDCs)

• (b) Analysis of MDG achievements or lack of
  progress will be
  
• evidence based
• (c) Identify the causes and factors in some
  countries not achieving MDGs
  
• (d) Explore best practices and lessons learned
• (e) Identifying areas requiring special attention
  both in terms of policy and its implementation
  
• (f) Sharing practical experiences which are more
  effective in achieving development goals and can
  be implemented efficiently and at low cost.

• To ensure standardization and consistency, the
  basic data will be drawn from Global MDG data
  base maintained by the United Nations Statistics
  Division at http//millenniumindicators.un.org/uns
  d/mi/mi_goals.asp
• For data gaps (Central Asia and PICs), it will be
  supplemented by available data from sub-regional
  MDG Reports of Central Asia and PICs, National
  MDGR and in some cases national sources
