  • Spanish, Haitian Creole, Albanian, Chinese,
    French, Russian, Vietnamese, German, Gyrati,
    Hungarian, Khmer, Tagalog, Thai, Serbo-Croatian,
    Tibetan, Yugoslavian.

Total ELL Population
  • We presently serve 199 students.

Major Goal
  • To ensure that all students attain English
    proficiency via an ESOL(English to Speakers of
    Other Languages) program that is aligned to
    ESL/ELA and content area standards.
  • The department seeks to accomplish this goal by
    engaging both ESL and mainstream teachers in
  • ongoing instructional conversations about best
    practices
  • developing curricula
  • developing strong homeschool partnerships

Long Term Goals (Elementary, Middle and High
School)
  • To become familiar with the K-12 continuum
  • To bridge language development with literacy,
    mathematics and writing
  • To assist student learning by differentiating
    instruction
  • To develop curricula that is rigorous and allows
    students to make text, self and world connections

    Acquire L2 (second language) and develop both
    BICS (Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills)
    and CALP (Cognitive Academic Language
    Proficiency)

Specific Goals for the Middle School
  • Develop a curriculum for SIFE (Students With
    Interrupted Formal Education)
  • Select appropriate textbooks upon board approval
    for
  • Newcomers
  • Beginning ESL
  • Intermediate ESL
  • Advanced ESL

Specific Goals for the High School
  • The Newcomers program will be implemented as of
    September 2005 with goals to
  • ensure academic achievement and language
    proficiency for newly arrived English language
    learners with limited or no formal education
  • provide students with opportunities to master
    basic skills in L2, reading, writing,
    mathematics, global studies, government and
    economics

  • To provide cutting edge professional development
    for administrators, teachers, teaching
    assistants, student teachers, family resource
    center coordinators and members of the community
    that express an interest in learning.
  • To maintain clear communication and ongoing
    rapport with all constituents.
